Using Anti Parasite Spot On

Hi all,

I've decided to give my Syrian some of this anti parasite stuff by Beaphar because she has some bald patches appearing along the side where her back legs are. I'm guesing this is mainly due to her squeezing under drawers and things but just to be on the safe side! The box said to use 2 pipettes for a Syrian, well, I used most of one pipette on her neck and rubbed it in to her skin, it's very wet looking and I'm not sure if I have applied it correctly? Elvis is white so she looks a little odd now that her skin is showing!! Is this stuff really safe for hamsters? Will she clean it off and should I use the proper dosage?

Elvis has the run of my bedroom, and has also ruined several of my belongings but it's a tiny tiny price to pay! She has fun so you know, it's only material goods. She is safe, I have taken all that into consideration - wires, sharp objects, choking hazards.

I guess I just want to know if this anti parasite is ok to use, and just how much should you apply to their bodies?! It does seem like an awful lot!!

Personally I would not use this treatment at all without a firm diagnosis of mites from the vets with a skin scrape. The drops can have side effects I believe.
The baldness you decribe could be due to several things including old age, hormonal problems, allergies, Cushings disease or kidney disease as well as parasites. It may be best to have her checked out if she seems uncomfortable, is scratching or has small pinprick scabs which could be a sign of mites. Is she drinking a lot? weeing? Is the skin red or flakey?

Hi,

Hard to tell if the skin is red as she's rather pink skinned anyhow! She's my first hamster, is now a year and 2 months and full of beans. I only used the drops as I thought they were like the ones you use on Cats or dogs, to prevent mites etc.

Little worried now! Should I wash it off? I'd rather she was wet than covered in something that might cause side effects.

I would just use a tissue and absorb as much of the stuff as you can off her. Don't get her wet though as this can chill her. Dab at the spot. If she was in a cage I would just put her on ripped kitchen roll to absorb it off her. It is not a preventative like the cat & dog ones but a treatment that kill parasites I think. Is the active ingredient Invectermin as that should be OK but I would still try and mop up as much as possible. Do you keep her free running all the time? Does she not wee everywhere

I would not feel safe with ours roaming free!

Thank you, I'll catch her and wipe as much as I can off! Thank god I didn't use 2...

It's the oddest thing - Elvis has toilet trained herself, if she needs the toilet or water, she runs back up to her cage. She only gets out when I get home from work, and when she wakes up, (I never had a Hamster as a kid..!) until I go to bed. I'd never ever let her out when nobody was in!! For a first hamster, she's been quite the model pet. I think I'm just either very lucky or they're all like that. Thanks again for your help, It's time she went back in her cage anyhow!

don't panic if you can't get it off her, i used this several times without side-effects. I too thought it was a preventative thing

Thanks for all your advice! She's absolutely fine today, wriggled a *lot* when I tried to get it off her, will keep an eye on the patches anyhow - like I said, I suspect it's to do with big body small spaces!!!
