I've also written to both zooplus and Karlie about what happened and raised my concerns about the quality/ possible skipped quality check of the wheel I got for poor Pumpkin. Hopefully I'll get a reply from them.
This is a photo of the blood marks on the wheel. Hopefully if anyone else is thinking about buying the wonderland wheel they will see this and thoroughly it the wheel before giving it to a beloved hamster.

Awww bless her! That's such a cute shot
Rodipet sell wheels with cork tracks so I guess the cork would be safe but I'm not at all sure about the glue on sticky back stuff, if she did decide to have a chew it might not be safe.
Buttercup yellow plastikote sounds good, I have one that colour

Oh I meant to finish about the vet story that I think it really makes a difference when they have their own personal experience with hamster. I'd definitely recommend her!!

The cork wheels do look nice but one thing to bear in mind is that if she does pee in it cleaning would be a bit of a problem, I have no idea how you'd get cork really clean!

Oh that's a good point! She really doesn't seem to have decided on a toilet area yet... I can imagine it would soak into the cork quite deep. I could always try a large plastic one? Although I worry that they might be more slippery (especially when peed on...)?

Cork sounds like a lovely running surface, but pee would just soak into it as it does wood. I had to laugh because I think the only stuff that would weld it to the wood would be yaught varnish!!!! And somehow I don`t think that`s rodent friendly!

It`s a shame that these wooden wheels cause some owners (moreso their hamster`s feet!) problems because for the price, they are decent wheels. Leile you are doing a wonderful job with Pumpkin and I`m sure she appreciates having a clued up mum.

As for other wheels....well Syrians being the largest hamster species need larger wheels, so the options are limited, although the Wodent wheel is solid and plastic, but when I had mine, I still heard it `rattle` so not ideal if the cage is in your bedroom! x

I can't find that cork on a roll now, but it was something like this sheet which could be cut into strips I guess. It doesn't say what kind of adhesive it is, but it stays stuck down well apparently. I'd thought of taking the struts off the wonderland wheel and sticking cork on it (which I saw done on a german video I think).

So wouldn't plastikote put a sealant layer on cork Racing Hamster (I'm not an expert in these things). Some people on German forums said the same thing - wouldn't it get stinky, but one owner said hers didn't and she just washed it once a year - I don't know if she sealed it with something or not.

Leila - I've got a Wodent wheel coming in a few days - if it's big enough for Charlie I reckon it would be big enough for most large hams - I'll let you know (I ordered it from the Sugarglider website). I still have the Wobust wheel sitting here, which is big enough, but so deep it would barely fit in my cage.

I hadn't thought about them slipping on their wee on a plastic surface! (Not a problem for me but I see the point). Sounds like we need some hammy pampers for wheeltime (nappies).

Forgot to put the link! It doesn't say what kind of adhesive is on the back - maybe something like the stuff that's on the back of gaffa tape?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Self-Adhesiv...+adhesive+cork

It might be worth a try for Charlie - he's not a chewer (famous last words) and he doesn't pee in his wheel (ditto).
