Dwarf ham always squeaking?
Hi everyone,
I've had many worries with my little WW dwarf recently. He randomly lost loads of weight, then I realised his water bottle was barely working so I changed it & he seems to have put weight back on, so maybe lack of water did this.
But now, for possibly the last 3/4 days he is continuously squeeking, he's never done this before & I've had him over a year. When he eats, sleeps, runs he is always squeeking & his body moves up/down quite fast when he's breathing.
He's also acting very strange, he lifts his head right back & is always tripping/falling over & when I get him out doesn't seem to happy, he jumped out of my hands the other day but he is normally extremely tame.
Can anyone help? I can't take him to the vets until Monday which is 3 days away so would appreciate anything, thanks!

Does he seem to be sneezing at all or just squeaking?

Re: Dwarf ham always squeaking?
Sorry to hear this, it does sound as though something is wrong but it's hard to tell what, I would just try to keep him quiet & don't handle him unless you have to until you can get him to the vet.
As long as he can get to food & water if he needs to there isn't much else you can do other than keep an eye on him for any more changes meanwhile.
Good luck with him, hope the vet can help.

Re: Dwarf ham always squeaking?
It does sound as though there is something amiss with his breathing, or he`s feeling something else. Your vet will check him over and listen to his chest and prescribe Baytril if the vet feels he has a respiratory issue going on. Hamsters shouldn`t make any noises while breathing in and out. They are vocal only when communicating through fear or agitation.
cypher is right about not handling him a lot and monitor him until he can see the vet. Let him sleep, make sure his food dish and most importantly, his water bottle are working well and is hanging low enough for easy reach/use.
If he`s coming out to eat/drink and seems content in himself, the noises he`s making and the recent weight loss can be explained to the vet you see. Pets At Home stores have in-store vets, so t might be a good idea to find out if a store near to you has one? They are supposed to be very good, so if you feel he needs to see a vet before Monday, this would be a good choice. x

Keep an eye on him till you take him to the vet on Monday, the vet will be able to check him over and will be able to prescribe medication should he need it.
Make sure he's comfortable by giving him extra bedding, ensure he's got plenty water and food. Keep an eye but, try not to disturb him too much.

Not sneezing is good but the others're right that its still worth seeing a vet when you can, I hope the vet visit goes well when you go

Re: Dwarf ham always squeaking?
Update: he had actually stopped squeeking by Monday but has been walking around carry his head to the side, I still took him to the vets who said it may be an ear infection so I have Beytril twice a day for the next two weeks, he's still squeeking every now & then especially in his sleep but he's eating & drinking fine, running on his wheel a lot.
If he doesn't seem better the vet says chances are he's had a stroke or has a tumour /:
Fingers crossed the antibiotics work & that's all it is

Re: Dwarf ham always squeaking?
Great that you took him to the vets. It's important that you continue his medicine and finish the course.
Antibiotics can be hard on their stomach so I would suggest Probiotic Yoghurt, I would also recommend Probiotic Powder for small pets - P@H sell this for £5.50 and you add a pinch of it to his food, fruit or veggies everyday.
I did this with my oldest hammy and it really helped, I also gave him Heinz baby food. The baby cauliflower cheese and the Brocolli cauliflower cheese were favourites of his.
I wish your little guy a speedy recovery. What's his name?
