Question lentil's cut tail

Hi everyone!

I was hoping someone could help.

I just checked on Lentil to get her out of her cage for a run around, and it seems she's got a graze on her tail.

I let her have a run around to check if she was okay - she seems completely fine and her normal cheeky self

I checked the cage, and her platform had teeny splatters of blood on it. I can't work out how she's cut her tail, but I'm assuming the blood spatters are from it. I've removed her platform (it was a magazine file Ikea thing), because it had spilt sand on it and I'm wondering if she's grazed it on that.

I've tried to clean the cut with some lukewarm salt water and a cotton bud - she doesn't seem to mind me touching it with the cotton bud but she was so wiggly that I don't know how well I cleaned it (she seemed to be more interested in trying to eat the cotton bud which means she's now got a bit of a wet backside from the salt water!).

Is there anything else I should do? I'm really worried, only because I read about another owner who saw splattered blood and it ended up with her hammy passing away from a mouth infection. I've probably just wound myself up though.

Anyone else's suggestions would be great!!

ps sorry for the hideously large pictures, I'm new at this haha. (poor Lentil, having her bum shown to the internet)

EDIT: had a good look over it, it's not deep - it appears she's just 'skinned' it. Eek! Anyway, glad it wasn't anything major. Is there anything else anyone thinks I should do?

Just keep an eye on it for now. The main thing is you know where the blood came from so you can keep a watch for infections. I don't think it looks angry & like you said, she's fine with you touching it. She may have caught it on a splinter from her platform or has she chewed any plastic in her cage giving a rough edge she may have squeezed through? Anyway, hope she's okay.

P.S. If it helps, if you're using photo bucket there is an option to resize, if you click on the photo then some little icons appear including an editing one & resizing is in that. Ignore me if you know that already - it took me a while to twig that option was there

I'd not worry at all really. I'd keep an eye on it but the chances are really good that it'll heal up on its own

That said I doubt she grazed her tail on spilt sand, have you checked elsewhere in the cage for bits she could've scratched herself on?

Agree with the others. It`s a minor cut/graze and cleaning it with a little salt water and a cotton ball will be fine. Then just leave it alone. I would only be concerned if the cut became oozy or swollen.

Removing the Ikea filing shelf may be a good move but maybe look at paining it with a thick layer of safe paint to prevent any splinters or pitfalls before putting it back in, or better still, use something more solid. It`s easy to overlook things like splinters, areas where a hamster may put it`s paw and get it jammed in (or a tail!) and easily become trapped or hurt, so inspecting all the areas around the cage and what`s in the cage for any possible dangers, albeit small, is essential.

Hope Lentil is none the worst for her raw tail! x

I agree with everyone above, it looks like a graze but will heal.
Any wooden objects might need sanding down to avoid anymore cuts.

Thank-you everyone for your help!

Threw out the magazine file - she'd chewed through most of it anyway (it was just a cardboard one). I spent ages painting it with non-toxic poster paint and PVA, then sticking lolly sticks to make fencing. Shows it's appreciated I suppose !
