Re: cost for a hamster to be put to sleep
Probably only about £5, seeing as a hamster won't need much anaesthetic to OD. Sorry about your hamster
It's horrible how they have to charge for it, but I guess anaesthetic costs money.
There are probably a few DIY methods, but I wouldn't recommend them because chances are it won't be totally painless.

Re: cost for a hamster to be put to sleep
It depends on the vet, their pharmacy supplier and the weight of the hamster.
Some vets charge a consult fee on top of the cost of the dolethal (what is normally used for euthanasia in small animal practice). The cost of the dolethal depends on what the pharma rep charges and the mark up the vet ads on. The amount of dolethal used can alter the cost to you also. A smaller animal will need less and thus a lesser cost in many practices.
Charges vary greatly between practices. Chains like vets4pets are normally cheaper.
Sorry for the decision your having to make. X

Re: cost for a hamster to be put to sleep
Mine charged a consult fee a few years back plus the charge for the putting to sleep.
Agree with Dalis mum about practices charging differently.

Re: cost for a hamster to be put to sleep
Finding out for sure would mean phoning the surgery you use. It`s better to talk it over with your vet anyway regarding whether they use a small amount of anaesthetic before injecting. My vet used to just inject without using gas, but I wouldn`t have that now. I didn`t really have a say back then but I`m more aware of the methods they use now. I would much rather pay the cost of having a peaceful end than look at what it costs given the hamster has given me happy times and companionship. It`s the least we can do to make their final day as peaceful as possible and I would only consider euthanasia if my hamster was so ill he couldn`t be saved. x

Re: cost for a hamster to be put to sleep
Its actually better for them to just have an inter perineal injection of the dolethal.
The isoflourane gas makes them feel like they're drowning meaning the last thing the experience is panic in trying to escape from a modified sandwich box. The IP injection makes them feel a bit woody, like we are after a few glasses of wine then they fall asleep abduction eventually their heart stops. Much more peaceful.
With anything bigger than a rabbit i would suggest IV dolethal. Same effect but quicker.
