Default Blood discharge from Syrian hamster

Hi! I have a female Syrian hamster almost 2 years old. I went to pick her up today when she woke up and noticed that she had some red discharge, very little. I got very worried as this has never happened before. I went online and looked into it and read that hamsters do not have menstrual cycles and that blood discharge during heat and the estrus cycle is abnormal. I also read about Pyometra, which really scared me. It doesn't seem like my hamster has Pyometra as she does not have swelling in her abdominal area and there is no foul smell or pus when I lightly squeeze her tummy (suggested in another thread). She is eating fine and being her usual self aside from the little blood discharge. The blood discharge is not from her urine as she has a designated area in her cage that she goes to for going. I am very worried that she is sick, please help!

It's really hard to say what the problem is from what you've been able to tell us but any signs of bleeding need to be checked out so I think it would probably be best to get her looked at by your vet.

I agree with cypher, make an appointment with your vet.

Should I wait and see how she is doing tomorrow? I read online that female hamsters may have spotting a few times in their life for 1-2 days. The color of the blood discharge is not a bright red color but a dark brownish red color, if that helps. I want to take her to the vet but my parents won't allow it because they do not think that she is sick

A few things you could try explaining to your parents are that as hamsters are so small they have very little blood to lose so only a small blood loss can be significant, also once they really appear sick it's often too late to do anything.
If there isn't really anything too serious wrong with your ham a vet check shouldn't cost them too much but if they wait until she's looking really sick & the vet is able to save her it will probably cost them a fair bit more than a quick check now.
She may be ok until tomorrow, it all depends on how much blood she's lost but even so I would try to get your parents to understand how important an early vet check can be.

If the blood is a dark reddish brown this indicates it is coming from higher up and is not just a little cut or something. It is usually from the womb and can be due to either a tumour in the womb or an infection. Is she drinking more than normal would she say? Drinking more is often the first sign of a pyometra and the hammy can appear quite well otherwise. A tumour that is bleeding though is always a worry as it must be affecting the organs inside and a constant blood loss weakens the hamster. At her age it is unlikely to be operable as she is an elderly little lady now but some treatment with some antibiotics could keep her comfortable for a while yet and may stop the bleed.
It is hard when your parents don't agree she needs seen. Ask your mum what she would do if she suddenly had abnormal bleeding. I bet she would go to the doctor so maybe she would see that your hammy needs to be seen too? Perhaps offer to do some chores to earn the money for a vet visit?
I've never had a female with blood spotting for no reason so I really don't believe that spotting is common. I hope you can sort it out and it works out well for you both. You are a very caring owner I can see. x

I so agree! Sometimes waiting can worsen the problem, hamsters can't speak, we have to for them.
Tell your mum that blood loss in a hamster is very serious and your hammie needs to see a vet asap.
Tell your mum you'll do extra chores around the house.

Thank you for all your replies! She had the blood discharge once, which was whenIi checked on her last night, and the amount of blood was around a drop. I just checked on her this morning and there is no new blood discharge and she doesn't seem to be drinking more than usual. I will talk to my parents after school today.

I talked to my parents and they said to watch over her to see if this occurs again and then they will decide whether to bring her to the vet or not. I keep checking on her and she hasn't had any blood discharge other than that one time. I'm just hoping that she is fine and that it might be something related to her menstrual cycle.
