Default Fur loss, moult or something else?

Hi all,

My male syrian around 6months old is losing fur on his back near the neck area. I noticed he's got quite a few more black spots like the one in the photo but this one has a bald patch. The others have small fur growing on it. Did he get caught into something or is he not getting enough nutrition?

He's running on his wheel as usual but I've noticed he's not touching his pellets. He only ate the seeds in his mix. Please help!

I've tried uploading pics but the forums won't allow me to insert urls @_@

Make sure his wheel is big enough and the hair is not getting stuck in the spindle. I have one Syrian that had some hair on his neck pulled out from his wheel. I know they molt sometimes too but I believe that happens more in the springtime. If it continues I would say he needs to see a vet, mites can cause hairless also. As long as you are feeding a good balance of food nutrition should not be a problem

Hi, thanks for your welcome Erin! I've been lurking on this forum for quite some time before I decided to register.

I double checked the cage and I haven't seen fur on the wheel or his tubes. He's staying in a habitrail ovo connected to a loft and an wall mount playpen. He's growing back his bald spots as of now although he's being picky with his food. Completely ignoring his pellets. I'm quite worried as he's only picking the seeds from his mix. :/ Are there any vitamin supplements for hammy fur? Or any food/veggies I can feed him at the moment?

What size wheel does he have? An adult syrian (and at 6 months he is an adult)should have at least an 8 inch wheel, but many will need an even bigger 11 inch wheel. His back may be running against the spindle. I know that the wheels in a habitrail are too small for grown Syrians.

What kind of food are you giving him? If you know the brand it could help.

Hi, he's running on the habitrail trainer. I saw bits of hair on the axel last night so I took out his wheel. I'll switch him to a WW this weekend. I feel so sad he lost some of his fluffy coat to his wheel, I should've noticed sooner.

Right now baby hair is growing from the bald spots. I panicked when I saw the black spots cause I thought it was a skin condition, turns out they're small fur coming out. He's eating a vitakraft seed mix combined with versele laga pellets. Lately he's been picking out only the seeds and leaving the pellets on his food bowl. He also doesn't eat protein foods (egg, insects, meat etc) only veggies like carrots and cucumber. Is there any way to encourage him to eat better?
