Hamster loosing fur.

My hamsters about a year old now. Last week I noticed that his fur looked like it was thinning out (he's long haired). I've been ill the past week (kidney infection so not contagious) but when I got him out last night the fur that was thinning on the back of his neck has now completely gone. I'm going to book him in at the vets but as I'm ill at the moment I don't know when I'm going to manage to take him. Any ideas what it might be??

It could be alopecia. It affects humans and animals. Erinshamsters (off youtube) hamster Einstein has it, I will try to fix a link to a few of her videos if you haven't seen them already.

With older hamsters, especially ones with LH, you will notice their fur thinning, it's a normal age process. If there is flakyness, redness, soreness or bald patches then it becomes more to worry about.

My hamster started losing fur and was very itchy at a young age. He had ringworm.

Thank you, I'd just watched it before I saw your post !! The skins not red or flaky, but it has turned into a bald patch on the back of his neck.
