Rosie passed away
We first realised that our sweet Rosie (Syrian) wasnt well on Thursday morning, with watery eyes and nose and completely uncoordinated movement. We thought at first it might be the result of an allergic reaction or cold, but when she refused to eat and I had to drop water into her mouth, we realised it was something more serious. By Friday evening there was no brain activity although she was still breathing. I know this sounds callous to some, but I decided to end her suffering. I feel incredibly guilty but there was nothing else that could have been done to save her. She was nearly 2 years old and we think she must have suffered a stroke. With being old, her ability to recover was much lower than a younger animal. The reason I am posting this topic is that I feel incredibly guilty, although I know I did the right thing. Is there anyone else out there that has faced the same situation? x

Re: Rosie passed away
Hey Anna
Firstly welcome to hamster central although its a shame you have found us under sad circumstances. As you no doubt are aware hamsters can go down hill very quickly when they are ill and something like a cold can take them by surprise and cause them a lot of bother.
One of my hamsters died at the begining of the year after having a stroke. She was a little older than your rosie was and slipped away quietly in our hands. I think when a hamster or any animal you love passes you feel guilty and wonder if there is anything that you could have done to help them or prevent it from happening, but unfortunately with illness as is often the case in humans too, there is little that can stop nature doing what nature intended.
For Rosie to have made 2 years old, she must have been a much loved and cared for little hamster so try not to think about this sad aspect of her life and remember the good times that you had when she was healthy.
Sleep tight Rosie and heal fast Anna.

Re: Rosie passed away
Welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear of your loss. When you make a decision to give your hamster rest you should never doubt yourself. When that decision is made from love it is never wrong. You gave her a helping hand on the road to the bridge when you felt in your heart she could no longer cope with the burdon of her life. I am sure she is watching you now and is grateful for the release from pain and I believe that they can communicate their need to go. You listened closely and heard her plea.
Rest in Peace Rosie and I hope you memories will be of comfort Anna.

Re: Rosie passed away
The wrong thing is to let an animal suffer, you helped Rosie leave comfortably
