Java hurt her toe
Java's Sore Toe - Imgur
Java seems to have hurt her toe - I imagine the nail caught on something and it's just been further irritated.
So far we have...
-Removed her sand bath
-Removed her wheel
-Soaked her foot in saline solution for about 10 minutes x 2
-Put polysporin on the toe
It looks like there is some pus coming to the top of the wound - almost like a blister. We noticed it yesterday, but were just going to keep an eye on it. Now it looks angrier so I imagine she needs a course of baytril, or something of the like. I'm going to get her into the vet ASAP, so I hope our vet has an opening tomorrow evening. Otherwise I'll call around until I can find a place that can see us, or ask for some time off work.
Now, in the mean time, should we just continue what we're doing? She does seem to favour it, but only slightly. Last night she was still running on her wheel (though it's out now). I'm considering giving her a water dish, as I don't want her climbing her bottle at all and possibly hurting it more that way.
Any other ideas? I would have tried some fresh thyme, but I cannot for the life of me find even my dried thyme, and everything is closed.
She doesn't appear to be in pain, but I'm sure it's not comfortable. Thoughts?
It's a shame too, she always has longer nails on the outside and I didn't notice until the evening when she was really active (so no nail clipping). So I planned to clip it the next morning. I still managed to clip the nail a bit, but it had already been pulled. Poor girl, and definitely feeling as though this is my fault.

Re: Java hurt her toe
I'd continue with what you're doing (although maybe stopping the polysporin - there's always a slim chance of allergies) and see the vet. Pus probably means an infection unfortunately

Re: Java hurt her toe
She's had the polysporin before when I nicked the quick on her the first time, so I /think/ we're okay. But she likely won't have anymore, especially as we'll be at work tomorrow. I'm really hoping we can get in, but it's all dependent on vet times and if they have room for us. I have three places I can try, so that's good.
I wasn't worried until I saw the small white-ish bubble which definitely looks like pus. I was getting skittish with how it looked this morning too, so this just furthers my "TO THE VET" desire.
I already have the car at my disposal, so that won't be a problem, and my SO is understanding and wants her seen too.
I'll see what she's like when she wakes up (in about two hours). She seemed fairly alert and "Java-y" the past two days, but I know first hand how fast things can progress.
Hoping all is well and the vet just gives us some antibiotics.
Poor girl. It looks so sore
Thanks Kyrill, I'm really glad we're on the right track. Thankfully I've been pretty good with healing up most things at home, but this one looks like it's a bit out of my grasp. I need to start making my own hammy pharmacy, hehe.

It's not your fault. Unfortunately hamsters get injuries. You are doing everything you can. Hope she heals soon!

Re: Java hurt her toe
I'm sure she'll be ok in the end Its good she's had the polysporin before - I'm a bit overcautious with pets and human meds but its largely because my blood reacts badly to something in savlon and I dread a pet getting the same reaction.
Good luck with the vets, hopefully someone can see you and sort her out

Re: Java hurt her toe
Yeah, I remember you mentioning it before. So far all of our hams except Mocha have had polysporin with no reactions. When we put it on Caramel we smeared a little around the cage so Mocha would realise it was in the cage and not just on Caramel only, and he did roll in it a bit, so I think he's fine too. Hopefully. I've not heard of anyone here being allergic to poly, but considering I'm allergic to ibuprofen, which is usually everyone's pain killer of choice, I know being extra cautious helps.
I really hope all will go well. I'm probably worrying too much over it, but at least it means she'll see the vet. I'm hoping she'll recover swiftly and take her medicine like an angel, since my SO will have to do the medication when I'm not here.

Re: Java hurt her toe
Little wee one has an appointment for 5:30 at a vet we haven't been to, so it'll be a race to get home from work in time. Thank god I prepped the travel cage last night and not today!
