As long as they are still passing normal poops at least the bowel is coping. The problem with long term antibiotics is that they destroy the bowels natural bacteria which are vital in helping with digestion inside the body. They also produce extra vitamins and break down certain foods. I would be sure to add some vitamins either to food or water and give some of the probiotic powder in the water or on food a few hours after the meds so the good bacteria are not killed by the baytril. Something like PRO C from P@H or Avipro from vetark would be good. You need to change the solution in the bottle daily. If the infection keps coming back when you stop the baytril it is better to try and maintain them on a low dose than get an acute infection overwhelming them.

Hi, tabitha smells worse again.

she is still very perky and running around but she is now permenmently leaking.

I am worried the next week or so will be her last.

she is such a lovely docile sweet little girl I love her so much.

xx

Sorry to hear this newtohamsters. If Tabitha is still quite perky would your vet consider doing a spay on her? To be honest this is the only cure for pyo as antibiotics give only temporary relief. It depends on the age of the hamster, how bad the infection and your position on costs and finding a vet who will try this.
If it is not possible then keep her clean by cotton wool wiping and frequent bedding changes and I hope she stays comfy for a while to come.

an update

Work has been so busy I have barely been on any forums but I thought I should come and let you know how things are going.

Tabitha is doing alright, she is starting to look old bless her, but I think that is mainly cos I wake her up for her meds! she doesn't have a chance to groom or anything! Tonight I got her out for her (which I now only do if she is awake) and she was very keen. She still leaks but some days she doesn't and doesn't smell.

She is so good about the meds. I give them both one ml of baytril with 4mls of soya milk in a syringe, now its been so long they are both extremly good at it and Willow now even seems to like the soya milk!

Willow well you wouldn't know she was ill aside from the very occasional messy behind but that is rare. I am taking them both to the vets on mon or tues for more meds.

I have to say to any one with hamsters with pyro,
1. its seems to be infectious.
2. I think (and so does the vet) the trick is the regular giving of antibiotics - 7.30 in the morning 7.30 at night- well you know 12 hours apart
3. dont think it is an immediate death sentence, I mean I know that its probable that tabs doesn't have long left but she is doing ok, still going for food and exercise and she has had it for ages now (and is probably 2 years as well.)

Hope that helps some one

Happy Christmas

xxxxx
