Re: I Think my Hammie has a cold
Hey guys, so I've been watching her more closely. She keeps shaking and cleaning herself. I'm starting to get freaked out and upset, should I go buy her bath sand? How do you check for mites? Listen to me I sound crazy.

Re: I Think my Hammie has a cold
If she has mites, she'd be scratching herself, not shaking and sneezing. A vet can also confirm mites, as they are too small for you to see. Bath sand won't get rid of mites. What it does is clean the fur of oils and dirt. You don't sound crazy, you sound worried.

Re: I Think my Hammie has a cold
Hi Guys,
Just a quick update, she was pretty active last night on her wheel, but I heard little fits of sneezing. This morning she acted normal looking for her breakfast and even wanted to come out.
She has a very strong stink to her now, she has had this before and I just gently wiped her with a wet cloth last time. Should I do this again or is this another symptom?
Thanks
Kate

Re: I Think my Hammie has a cold
Are you aware that female hammies go into heat every 4 days and can be really ripe? My Nutmeg's oder when she is in heat grosses me out utterly. I cannot handle her at all then as she leaves her oder on my hands and my clothes, which makes my male hammy go crazy licking me wherever he smells her. I just let her in her playpen then instead of on my bed of on my arm. I really don't think wet cloths are good for hammies as they will clean themselves.

Re: I Think my Hammie has a cold
UPDATE! Pancake is almost 100% acting normal again, she is running in her ball as we speak! I haven't heard her sneeze once since I woke up and barely rubbing her nose! She has been resting for the last day or two and I think she just needed that time to de-stress. Thanks for all the help. I'm so glad I have a supportive place like this to talk about my baby

That's great to hear. Yeah, my female, Java, carries cinnamon and is a stinky little missus during heat. She gets CRAZY hyper.
