Can you get her to take soaked mash - like the mix just soaked and mashed up a bit. Porridge is also good as is babyfood. If the teeth are not growing then don't worry about them not being ground down. Just feed soft food. Cubes of tofu, egg, chicken, pasta, rice, boiled veg, puried veg in a blender. Try what you can to get her eating.

She's been eating chicken, baby food and some of her mix soaked. Won't her bottom teeth overgrow and kill her though?

They may need trimmed but that will have to be done and you just need to watch her. She needs to eat so keep up with the soft foods and also her normal mix on offer as usual.

The vet told me you couldn't keep trimming them otherwise they'd break

I'm feeding her 2 ice blocks of babyfood a night (she doesn't eat it all though), her normal mix, some sunflower and pumpkin seeds I've shelled myself, her mix soaked and sometimes some chicken or veg.

well I've heard of many hamsters who needed clipping frequently and they did just fine nibblet so I'd keep doing it as needed.

I haven't done it before and don't know what to do.

They're looking a little overgrown now as well

Given that your choices are trim the teeth (or get the vet to do it) or watch your ham suffer from overgrown bottom teeth, I'd risk the regular trims anyway to be honest - especially since she won't be the first ham to need them I've heard of the risk of teeth breaking too but in some situations I'd definetly risk it anyway to be honest - when its that or an even worse option it'd feel like it wasn't a choice at all.

Good luck however it turns out, its a shame her teeth aren't regrowing

Radical action like removing the lower teeth could be done, but I`m not sure how drastic that would be in such a small animal. Although they are resilient little rodents. Tooth trimming can be done periodically otherwise the lower teeth will continually grow. I can`t imagine how having sharp teeth jagging into my upper gum might feel, but I`d go for the lower teeth to be trimmed every four/five weeks and see another vet if this one tells you it`s not a good thing. It may not be, but if it`s not carried out, the teeth will just become uncomfortable. I went through this with a gerbil I had and it wasn`t easy, but if you can get a routine going and do try to use hamster pellets and break up her own mix using a pestle & mortar (these are a brilliant tool to have) and lightly soften stuff for her, she should maintain her weight, although rodents with tooth problems do tend to lose weight/condition. x

One of my late hamsters had to have her teeth trimmed frequently when she got quite old, the vet did it the first couple times, then i did it for the rest of her life, they grew very quickly. Her bottom teeth grew out like V shape and up like an upside down walrus.

Oh, wow, thanks everyone!!!

I really thought it was over for Izzy. But I've just watched a video on clipping and it doesn't look as hard as I would of thought.

Just one question: where does the clipped tooth go? It could fall into her mouth?

I'll hopefully be trimming hers next week when my sister can help me.

Thanks again!!
