Better safe than sorry!
Hi! I hope this is in the right bit of the forums.
I recently got my first hamster, and I've noticed that even though she has wooden chews and things for her, she likes to gnaw on her wheel and house. I'm concerned that chewing plastic might harm her. Currently her health does seem fine, but I thought it better safe to ask than just ignore it.
Thanks!
L

Re: Better safe than sorry!
Personally, my hamster chew literally anything and everything. As long as he or she is not ingesting large amounts of the plastic, I would worry too much!
Hope this helped! X

Thanks for replying
It's not a huge amount, really just gnaw marks along the edges of things, but I couldn't help but worry.
Good to know!

Re: Better safe than sorry!
My hamster used to chew the base of his flying saucer. As has been said, as long as it's not a lot then I wouldn't worry. When they chew plastic they tend to ground it down into fine pieces and it just gets discarded rather than ingested.
I combated by finding one chew toy he really liked. Wasted so much money trying but eventually he decided he liked those wicker balls so now has loads of them!

I ended up doing the same, and after a few tries the wicker balls were a success with her! A larger cage is also getting delivered this evening, which I've been waiting on for a little while, so that ought to keep her occupied

The Savic hamster heaven metro :3 Set up at the mo, I'm just letting a few bits and bobs of hers give it a familiar smell before I change it over, letting her explore it, too.

Re: Better safe than sorry!
That sounds great for her! I have had a hamster heaven (still have) and I loved it, so did my hamster. Hope to see some pictures once she is all settled in to her new home!
