Default syrian hamster lump getting bigger by the second :(

My poor Elmo visited the vets on tuesday last week and has what the vets thought to be an abcess drained... It was under his chin... The vet gave him anti biotics and i was told to return with him on thursday following week.. Vet said that it could be his bottom tooth thats causing the infection...

I took elmo to vets today as he now has another lump but this one is on his left side cheek .. Near to where the one wa before but a bit higher round his face. They told m to take him back tomorrow for surgery as they think they are going to remove his top and bottom inccisor(s)...

But hes just woken up and the lump has doubled in sized since he visited vets at 10 today

what should i do?? What do you think it is and what are his chanced of being okay? Xx

Oh, Poor Elmo! You could try calling the vet and see if they can do something now, or get you the info for an emergency vet. Once he's taken care of he should be okay even without his incisors. His diet will have to be changed and the vet should help you with that. Hamsters do have other teeth besides the 4 front ones and they can chew with them. But smaller pieces for sure will be needed. After surgery you'll want to give him soft foods like porridge/oatmeal and baby food. Some scrambled egg would be good and soft cooked pasta too. Once he starts to heal you can also soak his hammy food in baby food or a bit of warm water to soften it. To make sure he has the nutrients he needs make sure to add vitamins to his water. Be sure to check all of my advice with your vet. That's the one whose info you must follow for Elmo's safety. I really hope Elmo gets through all this okay. I know you must be terrified for him. Please let us know how he does.

I would call too and ask advice. It sounds like it is filling up with either fluid or blood. This could be due to infection of a burst blood vessel leaking into the capsule.
I hope the vet can help him and sort this out x

I ended up leavin him last night as he was continuing to eat and play. Have taken him to vets today at 9 though instead of 11 for earlyer treatment.

Last time they looked in his mouth and said it was his teeth probably causing it but when i went in today they said they are only looking again at his teeth?!

Surely if thats whats causing it they should be removed asap?

Also i understand that the top has to be removed as they grinned on each other (past rabbit with toothypeg problems).. But do all of his front ones have to be removed?

Thank you both for all your advice xx

Elmo came back from the vets today. they have said that there is nothing wrong with his teeth at all. but they have drained the second abscess. he is still on antibiotics and i have been given the advice of bathing his two healing abscess in salty water once a day to keep them from healing and scabbing over, which will help keep them open so that the pus can keep oozing out.

i did mention about the soft food and they said there is no need for this...? but im unsure if hes partically knowledgeable in small animals due to the area i live in (sheep, horses, cows etc!! good old cumbria!)

however, i still believe he is off his food and also very lethargic, i.e he no longer chews his bars or goes on his wheel.

any more advice would be greatly appreciated

Oh how terrible hope he will get better soon.
If he is not eating I would just syringe feed him with baby food and give him little chopped up cucumber or banana. Also if you put his dry food in some baby food and leave it few hours it turns into fine looking mash and he might eat it. I'm sure someone come along soon give you god advice.
Meantime best of luck !

Also if you put some vitamin drops in his water it might help. You can get it any pet shops or even willkos.

im a little apprehensive in adding vitamins to his water as at the moment he does not have any water at all at the moment just his antibiotics and i don't wanna mix them incase something happens :/ i have gone and brought today though

Granpas sunday lunch but he didn't seem to like it so i fed him a bit of rice pudding apple and pear baby food and he loved that and is now running around like crazy!! fingers crossed that the teaspoon a day approach may give him some energy and keep his calories up

Rice pudding is firm favourite among hamsters I hear also mine likes oats porridge version too. When my Syrian hamster was poorly I gave her more than tea spoon per day. Gave her as much as she can eat by putting baby food in shallow little dish mixed with her normal food sometimes and as soon as it finished I added more.

I don't know what is "tapioca pudding" but sounds yummy
I meant rice pudding or breakfast porridge which are all jar of baby food names. And I give baby food to my Syrian girl once a week even she isn't sick. But when she was sick she had it all day along.
