Default Re: syrian hamster lump getting bigger by the second :(

i took hamster to the vets today as his abcess has come back again, but this time its black... im not sure whats happened. but tonight i decided to give hammy a salt water bath as bathing was proving stressful and Emlo likes baths. but now he is smelling so vile i dont want to go near him. i think the abcess has burst. i have wiped with a cotton wool ball but have oly got a small amount of yellow off but not significant amount to say it has indeed burst.....

what steps should i take tonight as im going to take him back to vets first thing in the morning?

also somebody has mentioned manuka honey as a dressing.... anybody else used this method?

thank you

I have used honey myself as a wound dressing. It doesn't have to be Manuka (which is super expensive), just pure honey. There's something the bees add to the Manuka honey which actively kills off bacteria but regular honey is just a good protective coating that seals the wound plus has some properties that kill off bacteria. You might try it but I know that honey shouldn't be given to babies and I can't remember why. You might want to check with the vet to make sure that it won't hurt your hamster if he licks any of it.

My vet used honey on my little puppy's wound and was good
As long as won't make your hamster's paw to sticky it should be ok ! Honey isn't poisonous to hamsters as my hammy's favourite treat happened to be "honey and sunflower " chew stick. And it looks very honey glazed/coated and she demolishes it very fast without getting sick.
Good luck with your poor little baby.

You need to get him back asap to the vets. The smell is the pus which is still full of bacteria. The blackness may mean the tissue has died and become gangrenous which means it may spread and cause blood poisoning.
This sounds as if it will need an operation to fully remove the dead area of skin, flush or remove the abscess and repair of the area that is damaged. I really hope it is soon enough to still be possible
Don't mess with honey on this wound till you have seen a vet It is very sticky and the hamster will lick it and the wound may get made worse
Good luck at the vet but do get in as early as you can.

I just wanted to say that my Hamster Elmo is now 100% better sorry for the slow reply! Souffle you sure scared me with your last post... vet said it draining like it did was the best thing that could of happened but I completely understand your concern

my recommendations if any one has the same problem is not to just wipe the lump with salt water but to actively bath the hamster in salt water. the warmness helped to open the wound and really allow it to dribble out. smells yuk but its so worth it

now Elmo is better im looking at getting him a new cage and setup so will be around those threads soon
