When is it safe to clean babies cage?
Chii's four babies are now 18 days old. They're cage is pretty stinky. When would it be safe to clean their house?? I don't want them getting wet tail or anything

Dwarfs don't get wet tail so you are safe in that respect. Normally you can clean when all the pups have their eyes open and mum is happy for you to touch them and hold them. Place everyone is a big storage box with some toys the try and remove everything except the nest area from the cage. Wipe over with kitchen roll and pet safe disinfectant and replace with clean substrate. Put in a big platter of yummy food then put everyone back in so that they are occupied with the food and don't notice the clean cage.
We use a sand box (chinese takeaway tray filled with sand) and the babies wee in that which makes cleaning easier though you do need to clean it several times a day if you have a big litter!

Do you buy chinchilla sand for them? The thought of frightening them while searching through the bedding is making me nervous I have a carry house for them so is it ok to put them all in that with the fluffy nest?

Re: When is it safe to clean babies cage?
yes we use the Charlie chinchilla sand.
It would be better it you had a larger plastic play bin for them if possible then you can also use it for taming.
Get them used to being picked up as this is the best time to do it while they are small. Plenty handling over the box, lift and lay then move on to lift run through hands and lay down then progress to lift and handling.
If they have fluffy bedding you should remove this right away totally as it can cause major problems with bowel blockages or wrapping round tiny toes. Use cheap loo roll ripped up for nesting.
They will be fine so try and not fret. It's always scary doing the first clean. Keep a handful of the old substrate and sprinkle that on top so they keep their scent around.

I normally clean my Syrian babies out at 20 days, I would leave it a little longer is mummy hamster isn't happy with your hands in the cage other wise I would say go ahead its 14 days that is the most important time not to disturb them.
