Exclamation HELP:-( I dropped my 17 day old dwarf hammy

Hi, I'm in a state of panic and feel sick to my stomach. I picked up my winter whites baby around an hour ago. She jumped out of my hands and landed from around 5 foot (((( She got knocked out and woke up a few seconds later wobbling really bad as if from a brain injury((((

I helped her back to where her mom "Chii" is and she started suckling from her. I then got a dried mealworm to give to Chii to get her our of the way so I could look at the baby. The baby stole the work from Chii and started eating it. She still seemed very shook.

I know it's different with all situations like this but what the heck do I do????

Thanks, I'm new here btw and I'm a first time hammy owner. I'm 27, so no I'm not a young teenager with her first hamster

They are quite resilient so leave her with mum for now. Most hammies that fall are just fine after they get over the shock! If she still seems to be behaving oddly after 12 hrs then see a vet for a full examination. I hope she is OK.

Please don't panic, something similar has happened to most of us and it's true how resilient they can be. For example a few weeks ago I took my Popcorn to the vet and as soon as they got him out on the table he ran to the edge and leaped off immediately, landing on his back on the floor and I swear I thought he was dead, as he just lay there unnaturally still. We scooped him back up on the table and he started walking with a slight limp, but the vet examined him and said he was completely fine, which I couldn't believe! By the time we got home he wasn't even limping any more! That wasn't from 5 foot though so you should keep an eye and any continuing signs definitely get checked out, just wanted to give you a bit of hope Are you sure 5 foot? I'm only 5'4 so that would be from roughly the height of my nose! Was it more like table height / chest height maybe?

Thank you so much for your kind words She/he seems to be very good today! But very scared of me now which I don't mind just as long as it's ok I'll gain it's trust again. I learned the hard way of making sure to HOLD A BABY HAMSTER WHILE SITTING DOWN CLOSE TO THE BED OR FLOOR!! I'm really glad I found this forum as I've lots of questions to ask Thanks again xxx

Glad to hear your little one is none the worst for the fall. It happens sometimes and it`s too late before we realise the mistake of holding him or her away from the base of the cage. Small animals can be unpredictable. Hope you enjoy the forum.

Hello Chii Mom. That sounds awful and I don't blame you for feeling panicky. Most of us, especially those who had hammies years ago before there were sites like this one had to learn by experience (I would rather have passed on some of it ). Glad the little one is doing better. The poor little thing will get over it with time and patience. So...Welcome to Hamster Central . Now you need to post how they are all doing and show us photos.
