Default Hamster weigh-in thread

I was just inspired by another thread talking about sizes of hamsters. Keeping track of your hamster's weight with regular weighing is always a good idea, something I do every few weeks or so. It's useful to spot any trends in growth or weight changes that might not be so obvious to the naked eye right away. I thought if we had a thread here, we could all post our hammies' weights every now and then to keep track and encourage each other to do it!

I use ordinary digital kitchen scales, and usually place the hamster in a bowl or something to keep them still (the girl robos, who are so lively, have to be weighed in their travel box or they'd be off).

What does everyone think?

ok hamster weights for mine tonight are
Si our new male hamster (don't know how old he is - guy said young end of fully grown whatever that may be ) 75g/3oz
Ponder who is the tiny one of the lot, and she is about 4 months and 2 weeks old 50g/2oz
Shadow, our big one, though does not look fat, she is 4 months and 3 weeks old 125g/4.5oz

Do these seem ok or should I worry about any of them?

Nelson weighs 152g and is 6 months. Males tend to weigh less than females. We tracked him from 4wks and he seems to have stopped now but some breeders say they sometimes have a sudden growth spurt a bit later. I think he runs off all his food as he is so active all the time!!!!

Gerald weighed in at about 96 grams. He looks kind of thin in the side, other wise seems healthy and fine, bright eyes and what not. I saw the Nelson weighs 152g, Im bit worried about gerald, but I think this all may be a result of his old age.

Does that sound about normal for a syrian hamster 96 grams??

will do... I have been giving them carrot, bits of apple, and I did share around half a boiled egg withthem the other day. They have more than enough dry food. I am so worried now, especially Ponder as she is the lightest by far - I can't see where I am going wrong

Noodoo, are your hamsters dwarfs or syrians because they are very light for Syrians. It very much depends on the breeding of the hamster. Showhams are bred for size and type and should be as large as possible (They want 180g -220g but doubt Nelson will ever be that big!) but petshop hams seem to be alot smaller. Alot depends on the feeding of the mother and the way the litter was raised. Dwarfs are much smaller than syrians. As long as they are active and look healthy then don't worry! :P
