Vet Care - how much should I budget?
When getting a new pet it is important you look to the future with regards to funding any vet care your hamster (or indeed any animal) might need.
Even though you may feel confident that you can afford vet care now things can chance in the future and you may not be able to afford if when you actually need it.
Few insurance companies will insure hamsters so to make provision you should set up a Vet Fund which you must be strict with and not dip into for other purposes. Remember the more hamsters and other animals you take on the more likely you are to have one or more become ill, thus the higher you vet care costs.
If you know you cannot afford to set money aside and will not be able to afford vet care in the future then you should think again and not get a pet until you are in a position to afford the vet care.
If your circumstances change and you are in an unexpected crisis with regards to having funds then there are some charities which offer vet care such as PDSA, RSPCA and Blue Cross and you should find out if you qualify. Some vets also offer payment plans.
Remember that vet costs vary hugely in different parts of the world and from area to area. It is wise to seek out a vet with hamster experience and check out their costs, including emergency call out fees before you get your pet and budget accordingly.
In this thread members can offer their advice on a reasonable vet fund in their area / country and the cost of treatments they may have had. Please do not name specific vets in this thread. People can PM you for a recommendation if they wish.
I will start so if everyone can follow the same protocol it will keep things easier to reference to. Please avoid chit chat and use this thread for your details which may be of help to other members regarding how much they should budget. Please add any procedures or treatments you may have had and their costs.

Re: Vet Care - how much should I budget?
I think RSPCA, PDSA, Blue Cross may only offer treatment to people in receipt of benefits?
Hopefully I am wrong.

Why do you hope you are wrong?
My Jack russel terrier when I was 15 needed vet treatment, my step father had just left us, and my mum had lost her job so we had no money, so I used the PDSA who were brilliant, and luckily the lump my dog had wasn't cancer, but he did need a few teeth removing. Situations can change, you can have a pet like we did (Scampi my Jack Russell) that went to the normal full fee paying vet, when we were a full family with wages coming in to the situation we were onwere my mum was left on her own we me,my younger sister and Scampi, we did have to rehome the puppy my step father had bought a few weeks before he left as we knew we couldn't afford to offer her all her needs at that time, this broke my mothers heart.

As I read it, I think Tracy meant that she hopes that people receiving benefits are not the only ones eligible for vet bill help

You are only eligible for PDSA help if you recieve council tax benefit or housing benefit.
