Exclamation Is Timmy OK?! :'(

Timmy was sleeping with his ears perked up, so I knew something was wrong. When I went to pick him up, he did not struggle to escape my arms! He has smelly and crusty fun on the bottom part of his body, in between his legs, and it goes from under his chin to under his tail. He seems very weak, and when I held him, he did not try to jump off of me like he usually does. He wobbles around when he walks. Occasionally Timmy squeaks, and it sounds different than his usual squeaks. His eyes are open half way, I do not know why unless it is just because he is tired... But I am afraid for his health. Timmy has a water bowl but it is not nearly big enough to do this to him! I know he avoids going near his water bowl unless he is thirsty. I have had Timmy for about a year and a half, and he has Never been like this. What is wrong? what do I do? Should I take him to the Vet? Help!!

I would think if he's not better by the morning then he should have a trip to the vets to see what's wrong. I hope he's better very soon.

Hi Julia.

My first instinct upon reading his symptoms is that he could have wet tail. If he's not eating or drinking, you may need to force-hydrate him for now but he will most definitely need to be seen by a vet.

If you can, try to give him some heavy-water content food such as cucumber. Another thing you can do is use a needless syringe to give him water. I have also heard that you can use straws (by sucking up the water yourself and blowing it back out gently into his mouth.) Both the syringe and the straw technique will require you to for the end of the syringe/straw into his mouth and be a little stern with him doing it to make sure that he gets the water.

The only other possible cause I can think of is that an absces in his stomach may have burst and caused him to, effectively, vomit. Which will also, definitely require a trip to the vet.

If you're able to take him now (i.e. it's daytime where you are) ring up and ask for an emergency appointment. If you're not able to take him now, do your best to hydrate him and get some food down him (plain porridge should be acceptable if he won't take his usual mix) until you can take him to the vet.

But most definitely, he should go to the vet. :<

Well, It was pretty hard to get him to drink water. He kind of a little, but he will just not open his mouth. I took his wheel out of his cage. He passed out, and did not move for like, five minutes! I think he may be vomiting. He needs water, and he loves sweet things so I put some watermelon in his cage hopefully he will eat it. it is not a lot. just a teeny slice. We cannot afford the vet. wa! He might die, I hope he does not. I cried so hard when he passed out, it was like he died right there in my hand... I cried harder when he started moving. I hope I can nurse him back to health! I put some new bedding in because he needs to sleep, and the bedding is... well... his bedding. He is not looking so good. I hope he is ok.

Meanwhile, the betta fish is confused as to where his hamster buddy is. They usually have the cage next to each other. I took the hamster to the living room to keep a closer eye on him. :'(

Timmy stopped vomting. he is sleeping in my lap right now. He seems bony. Timmy kinda sleeps in the middle of when he walks, and he will not eat his veggies(which he usually dives for). He is really tired, but should be active right now (11:17pm). He just passes in and out of consciousness.

Poor Timmy! I do hope he's feeling better, keep trying with the melon/cucumber etc. If he isn't getting better you really should try to get him to a vet. If you can't afford it is there any way to search for a vet that might offer a free service for people who are unable to pay? Or one that you may be able to pay in instalments?
Perhaps also think about saving up a vet fund for just such occasions. It's your responsibility to make sure Timmy has the care he needs and unfortunately sometimes this isn't cheap!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Timmy makes a full recovery!
