Default Chinese Hamster + Broken leg.

My friend Rachell has two chinese dwarf hamsters, and one of them, Luna, recently got attacked by the cat after what I assume was a cage escape.

I asked her if she wanted to post for some assistance and she sent me this to post for you guys:

"So i dont know if you read other comments[which is her cat attacking the hamster,et cetera] but that's pretty much what happened I brought her to petsmart to ask the lady I bought her from she's helped me with a bunch of my stuff she said ill need to probably have it amputated and gave me a surgeons number now she's seeming very lethargic but it could be because she's tired she is walking but her leg is dragging and it's painful to watch so I'm just kinda holding her"

The break is almost going in the complete opposite direction.

Opinions? I think she's going to the vet on monday. We're on the East coast of the USA.

I would say vet visit as soon as possible, emergency vet if possible as she could have internal bleeding too.
I hope everything works out xxx

This little hamster will need to see a vet as soon as possible. A leg break is a serious thing and she will be hiding a great deal of pain. Amputation is a big thing for such a small animal, but if she copes well with the surgery and post operative care she gets and adaptations her cage will require, she should manage. But a three legged hamster needs a lot more care and attention than one with all it`s legs.

Another good reason why anyone keeping a cat or cats should think before they bring in a rodent to a predetory household. This sort of incident could be prevented if the hamster is locked in a room that the cat is never allowed into. The hamster needs protecting from a species that will kill it with no hesitation. Or in this case, badly injure it.

I hope the hamster recovers.

Oh please! If the hamster has such a bad break that the leg is pointing in the opposite direction it really must go to the vet NOW. It feels pain just like you or your friend would, and just because it's a small animal doesn't mean the pain isn't BIG.
Vet NOW. It must be in agony. Imagine dragging a broken leg around after you.
Vet NOW. NOW.

Trix, I truly hope you can somehow explain to your friend just how urgent such a serious accident is, tell her to just imagine how it would feel if it was her, dragging a broken leg, come on, this is just pure common sense, this poor ham needs urgent urgent intervention, it must surely be in huge amounts of pain, just because it cannot talk does not mean it cannot feel. Please please please your friend needs to get this ham to a vet. Will cross paws & thumbs for this little one. Please let us know how hammy gets on.
