Default Hamster bleeding, please help?

Please respond if you have any advice or have had this happen to your hamster in the past.

I will have had my hamster exactly a year and a half in 9 days. She's a black Syrian hamster that I purchased from a pet shop. And until this point in time has been in perfect health and never had any problems.

Anyways, late last night I took her out to play because she was jumping at the side of the cage when I walked by, which isn't unusual, she's always hyper at night. So I picked her up and she quickly jumped into my hand and I was just walking around for a bit petting her before heading into a different room and setting her on my lap. When I looked down at the hand she had been sitting on I saw that about half my palm was covered in blood. I turned her over to examine her underside and it looked like there was a bit of blood near her vaginal opening.

I have this box that I use occasionally as a playpen for her (since the other legitimate pen I bought she got too big and could climb out of) and I placed her in it while I cleaned off my hand. When I came back she was just playing with her toys and acted like nothing was wrong. At first looking in the box I saw no more blood so I was just talking to my sister about what happened, and after a few minutes she left a wet puddle in the corner which definitely contained some blood in it, I'm not sure if anything else. It was veryyy watery but I'm almost positive it wasn't pee.

At this point I told my mom and she told me I needed to look up a vet nearby in case we need to take her there quickly. And also to figure out what it might be. So I put Bandit back into her cage so she'd be more comfortable and I did some research online. The suggestions I found were:

1.) Womb infection
2.) Internal cancer
3.) Ovarian Cysts

Do any of you know what might be wrong with her based on what I've said?

Yeah, but I found a close vet to me that said they would take small animals. But it was too late at night and they weren't open. So my mom told me to watch her the next morning to see if she was still okay.

Fast forward to this morning and Bandit still seems as normal as always. She's running around, eating, drinking, and climbing. I haven't noticed anymore blood and I've had her out for a while to see. She's sleeping now though. And we'll definitely take her to a vet if the symptoms return, but she seems so normal and nothing else has happened. Is there anything I can do at the moment to help make sure she's okay...? I read giving them raisins can help them get iron back if they've lost any blood, though I'm not sure how true that is. Plus I'm making sure she constantly has fresh water nearby.

So besides obviously taking her to the vet, is there anything else I can do in the meantime..? And what does this sound like to you? Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to give all the info I could. :/

I'm not sure there's anything you can do yourself in this case, except maybe give her some soft clean bedding and take out her wheel to let her rest. She needs to start on antibiotics asap and have a vet decide what to do for her.

*Hugs to you and your ham*

Carrot was the same. I picked her up one day and blood all over. I took her in to the vet and she had a tumor on her uterus. It caused her to bleed on and off for the next 8 months of her life but it didn't seem to affect her otherwise. You must go to the vet to get a diagnosis so you can help her.

I'd take her to the vets, they don't just bleed like that unless something is wrong and they can go downhill so quickly...

Having had a hamster die (Tilly) and recently nearly die due to pyometra I would strongly advise you to get hammy to a vet as soon as you can. It may not be pyometra but Only a vet can tell you if it something to worry about... biput time is of the essence!
Cinnamon was spayed a week and a half ago to cure her pyo but the earliest intervention with antibiotics possible gives them a fighting chance..

Good luck and keep us updated...

Hugs to you and hammy x

Thank everyone for the support and responses. *Hugs back* We've made an appointment with the vet but the earliest we could get one was for tomorrow morning. She still seems active and normal. But I've been checking/changing her bedding every few hours to see if there is any more blood. Each time I've found just a tiny bit.

Hopefully it's something that can be treated and she'll be okay. I've never been to this or any vet before as she is my first pet. Wish us luck <3

I agree with the possibility of it being pyo, it seems like reproductive tract issues surface later in life. I had a black bear who exhibited similar symptoms, and most of the time she would bleed heavily until she started moving and then she would be ok. I think waiting until the morning will be alright, I'm glad that you decided to err on the side of caution and made an appointment with a vet asap.
Please keep us informed and good luck to you both!
