Hammy Dr visit today
Sophie went to see the vet today. For a couple of days she had been trying to move food out of her right pouch and the size and shape of it never changed. Also, she wasn't acting herself. We suspected something was lodged in there and she couldn't get it out. It was the right move cuz now her pouches must feel better being emptied. We have decided not to give her whole pumpkin seeds in the shell any longer but only the hulled seeds. Since she is a senior hammy, these kinds of problems will happen if we aren't careful what she eats. Whew! Poor Sophie girl. Lesson learned.

Re: Hammy Dr visit today
Pumpkin seeds can be a tasty treat, but also very dangerous too. A lesson that is learned the hard way (we have been there :/) The oblong irregular shape of the seeds hull is very prone to getting stuck between their teeth and the pouch.
I'm glad to hear that you didn't waste no time in taking Sophie to the vet, and even happier that the vet was able to remedy the situation and make Sophie better

Yes, Pouches, Me too! I felt so bad for Sophie but am so glad we sought help for her and didn't wait any longer. We know Dr visits can be stressful, but in the end, we know it's necessary. Thanks for your comment

Poor Sophie! I am glad you went to the vet and got it taken care of. Now I'm going to be watching Patches and pumpkin seeds too.

I hope she feels better! Did the vet take a culture of the area? I know from prior experience that sometimes they can get an infection after a cheek pouch impaction.

Re: Hammy Dr visit today
No culture taken of the area, but the vet thought best to give her an antibiotic for a week, to ward off any further systemic results, especially since the pumpkin seed was very gooey and soft (as it was breaking down in her pouch). I can see that she is relieved to have it out of there! It was quite an adventurous day for her and she was sleeping a lot from the stress, I'm sure.
