A couple more taken of her going crazy on the bars... I think she had several day's worth of gnawing to get through.

She was out of her little hut, running round her cage, her wheel and gnawing on wood, cardboard and then the bars.

Thanks so much to Tutu and everyone else for their help and support through this difficult time, it really seems like Rhuby has made it through the worst.

Go rhubarb she is survived!!! I think she did have wet tail and you've worked hard to and she fought hard and won it!! Well done! My little Gertrude never done gnawing the bar thing. She is much more interested to getting sunflower seed out of me then digging down tunnel. I had come across tread about hammy stuck and hurt her tooth in cage bar. Hope rhubarb won't do that! Well done rhubarb beating the wet tail!!! )

I have just read the entirety of this thread and it has certainly given me hope.

We got Rex from a 'large chain pet shop' a week last saturday. Absolutely fine until roughly Weds when I noticed he was spending the majority of his time in his house whereas before he was a hyper little thing. That, and we noticed his ears were right back.

The classic 'wet tail' symptom was visible by the Sunday, seen right away during daily handling so we rushed him to the vet that day.

They gave me the option of either treating him at home, or as an 'in patient' at the vet. I opted for the latter, as I have two young children at home, so wanted him to be able to be treated in peace and quiet, with trained professionals.
I completely commend all that have proceeded with treatment at home, I really do.

Reading this thread has given me so much hope that Rex will be coming home.
As of today, his weightloss had slowed, he was eating both food and the supplementary food, and has begun hiding food in his bed. And has been increasingly brighter in himself.

Like you, I genuinely thought wet tail always ended badly, so now, I am really hoping that Rex begins to gain weight and recover well.

He has a brand new cage waiting for him (ordered before he contracted wet tail, so a lucky decision there).

Fingers crossed, and well done to all those that have helped their hammies through this awful condition.

xx

Hope Rex does well. I've seen a number of hammies survive wet tail on HC. Some also lost their fight. It can still kill a hammy. It needs to be taken care of as soon as possible by a vet. But it sure is wonderful when a hammy turns the corner and comes back from a really dreadful place. I remember years ago, it was not survivable.

Hope Rex pulls through.

Rhubarb managed to get through and is now one sprightly little(ish) hamster!

It was a struggle, and was upsetting too, but once she turned the corner, things just got better and better.

With the help of the vets, I would hope you have a good chance of him coming home soon

The only difficulty we are having with Rhuby is that she seems to be used to her house having a bit of a whiff, so potty training is not going as easily as it did with Coco. She is using her loo, but also the tubes and her house. We will keep trying though.

Keep us posted on Rex's progress.

Poor Rex hope he will get better. I think you done good thing leaving him with vet as they are very diligent about giving meds on time and keeping animals in dark warm place without disturbance etc. Since you have 2 youngsters it would've been difficult to keep him home. I think he will survive

I'm glad rhubarb doing well it took sometime for Gertrude figure out which corner to use as toilet. I'm sure rhubarb will do the same. But also they have been disturbed from their nest very often during their illness so it makes them a bit confused about their personal space maybe!? Another thing I thought until yesterday Gertrude was smallish for Syrian hamster due to her illness but nope she put on weight within last 1 week and now over 105 gm!! Am now worried she is going to be fat hamster/:/
Good luck little Rex and fingers crossed! Hope you'll be one of the lucky ones to win the battle.
Let us know how things are.
