Do you have enough data to graph males and females on two different graphs, as I have a feeling that you might be summing two overlapping bellcurves to generate one unified one with a peak in the middle?

Eg: my male hamsters are 145-180g, and my females are all over 200 (usually more 230-240) when fully grown, but if you just took an average of that you might conclude that all hamsters should be around 190 - which isn't really a normal weight for any of them.

Gertrude is 5 months old and weighs 134gm. She puts exactly 4gm weekly without fail. It never increases or falls even I up her intake of treats and mealworms etc. I find it fascinating how she maintains her regular weight gain

So, I entered 180 weights into X-cel and analysed the data. Here is what I found....

Using a sample of 180 Syrian hamster weights from the Hamster Weigh in Thread(excluding pregnant, ill, or very old/young hamsters), I have calculated that the average weight for a Syrian hamster is 162.3g.
However, there was a massive range of weights. The biggest hamster weighed 310g and the smallest weighed just 75g! This is a range of 235g
The median weight (middle weight) was 161g
In general, Females were heavier than males, most of the largest weights were from females.
The graph below illustrates the distribution of weights within the different bands-

Hamsters in the lower bands are most likely young/old/petshop hamsters and hamsters in the higher bands are most likely hamsters from breeders, but we would need more information to be able to fully conclude that.

So, if you're wondering if your hamster is a normal weight, this should be of some help. There doesn't seem to be a 'normal weight', just what is right for your hamster. If you have a large breeder hamster then there is no point expecting it to be 150g or less, and if you have a young petshop hamster then there is no point expecting it to be 200g or more! If your hamster seems happy, healthy and active, then it is a normal weight. This goes for all hamster species
All I can say is, W O W. Thanks for this definitive chart! No more wondering is my hamster thin/fat.

We've had a lot of hamsters since 2006 and the the majority of the females were 200+g the males are usually smaller, but some of ours have been 200-260g our smallest male (shearer, who was a short haired black and white banded, he had dark red eyes) he was 128-144g and he was our longest living hamster, living to 2 years 10 months and 2 weeks

Long haired males are usually smaller that short haired males

They seem to reach max weight 9-12 months

We have had many females (all pet shop) reached over 250g one nudging 300g (lily) she was a long stocky hamster, she wasn't fat

We thought she was big, until now

We recently got a pure bred hamster from a local breeder, lovely little thing.......then she started growing!

Bernadette is not even 5 months old yet and at her last weigh in she was 321g yes that's right, I don't have a teddy bear hamster, have a bear lol

She's lovely and friendly outside of her cage, she's very protective of her home if you put your hand in you will be lucky to get it back

She lets you know when she wants out, it's her rules we live by, she rules the roost.

321g this was a week or two ago. She is due weigh in tonight and she looks like she has grown again, my hand is getting too small to pick her up.

She is too big for the 12 inch trixie wheel so we have a rat/chinchilla wheel that is wide for her.
