I can and do scruff reegularly, bon soir needs his teeth clipped weekly, if i relied on the vet for that, itl be £60 s month for that alone. so I do it myself(WARNING, DONT DO IT UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW)
I often tip backwards. theres a point when you tip backwards where they stop and hold still, i do this to my girls especially.

scruffing is NOT a bad thing.

Haha. I've only ever seen Artie yawn once, and that was whilst he was still in the depths of his nest and there was no way I would have seen teeth!!! But it did look very nice, the big stretch that they do. Awww.

I don't think I've ever seen Darla yawn. Look sleepy/grumpy, yes, but not yawn

Thanks. That eases a knot of anxiety from me. Even though it feels mean to do it to him.

Let me clarify - so when you scruff them, rather than flip them straight onto their backs, you tilt them progressively more backwards until the point where they stop? Does this work for all of them? Or just occassionally? I will try that next time...

I tip just to look at bottoms, underside, or arms, if they really wriggle madly, I can result to scruffing. I have to scruff my robo for health checks, as he wont sit still for them, I do this once a week unless I see something that needs monitering, he just goes back to normal like it never happened.

Humph needed scruffing for his medicenes recently, he has always had agression with his tummy, so I had to use it to get him to take medicene, after a few days he would take it with barely a scruff, just toppled.

I always must scruff for teeth, dianna who had broken teeth needed it twice a week for observing them, i can topple her for bottom check, and scruff for teeth, would you like me to do a video on scruffing? and toppling? i can use a syrian and a dwarf

Well that would be amazing! I have a dwarf but I don't imagine anyone would complain if you did one with a syrian as well!!!

See, Artie wiggles even with scruffing?! And badly wriggles, to the extent that within the space of ten seconds he has dislodged my grip. I'll try the tipping method and see if he finds that more comfortable... with the crusting, should I just leave it be or should I try and 'wash' it away (water and cotton wool and allow to fully dry whilst keeping warm). If I need to wash it away I think it'll have to be done by scruffing as I don't imagine he would tolerate that just from tipping without trying to escape...

Thanks.

I have done the recording, please note, I am doing it at the wrong angle for me, so it might not be as smooth as normal, but you can see how to scruff and the end result. for teeth trimming it is much harder, and I wont show how to do it because its stressfull for me and the ham, once its done its fine and dandy tho. as I said, bon needs it, his where done last week, yesterday they where that long they where scratching his mouth, so I had to do them, some times its easy as, others its a pain.

My rooms a lil messy, you may need to turn it up as I cant be loud cos of my babys.

Models: nancy syrian 202g and humphreys ww dwarf 52g.

please note: humphreys has scar tissue on his bottom that has made it grow looking wrong, his under arms are bald due to an allergy, he did have a massive lump a few months ago but thats now gone. He has got an aggression issue because of his bottom, so sometimes I cant tip him for that reason. he will literally savage my fingers (not drawing blood) if i look under him or slip up and dont hold him the right way when doing it.
Vid in a few mins

I scruff hamsters perfectly fine when theres a reason. Only one was kind enough to not wriggle and I've scruffed six of those we own at somepoint.

As Yaz said scruffing is not bad, heck as far as I'm concerned its a lot safer than not doing so sometimes - like with Artie its the best option in my opinion.
I look forward to the video on it though as I do sometimes wonder if I could improve how I do it.

I'd leave Artie to it for now. Maybe check in a few hours/tomorrow and if its still there then wipe it, but he might clean himself up before then if we're lucky.
