I wish you all the best with Darcey shazzy and I`m sure this other vet will give you a better idea of what`s going on and the course of action to take. These womb infections seem to be quite a commom occurence in female hamsters and it`s such a shame. Because they don`t menstuate as human women do, it could be that the endometrium (lining of their womb) thickens as a result and shows up as a kind of hamster menopausal bleeding? I don`t know if it`s more common in non- breeding females or not, but it would be great if they could find a solution to it without the need for surgery. Best of luck hun. x

I hope that you get your answer on the next visit and that she can have her spay done. Most vets will put the hamster on antibiotics to reduce the infection and control it before operating and also to help them gain strength beforehand.
Pyometra is equally common in females who have been bred and not bred.
It would seem that the very frequent hormonal changes and the consequent opening of the cervix and increase in secretions (meant to facilitate sperm entry to the womb) make it easier for bacteria to enter the womb causing an infection. Hamsters are fastidious about cleaning and germs are easily transferred during the cleaning.
There has been some success with the medication Galastop but even this does not give a cure but a remission.

Oh no! I really hope it isn't pyo, it's my worst fear right now what with 3 Syrian girls and sko, I hope it's just a urinary infection or something else, pyo is hard to treat.
I hope your vet will be able to do the spay for you whilst she is still strong and fighting, the medicine souffle mentioned I have heard of before with genta, of vectice hams, I dont know if it was a 100%cure but it helped boost her back up to normal activities.

When nemesis had pyo she had a strong ammonia smell, it smelt severely 'off' dose she have any smell to her?

Fingers crossed for you and darcey *hugs*

Oh, no! It's so saddening to hear this :'( I really hope she makes a full recovery as she is your soul ham and it's really awful to feel them slipping through your fingers.

It's really good to hear that she's still strong though. Good luck at the vets and hope everything goes well. Thinking of you both xxx

Shazzy - you are doing your best and giving her the best chance by booking her in for the operation. The vet wouldn't do it if he didn't think there was a opportunity for better quality of life.

Will be thinking of you and her all day tomorrow and sending lots of healing for the best outcome.

Try not to worry. sugax
