Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
And your posting it brought it to my attention Krill. Sorry to hear you need this info, but I just read the whole entire thread and now I have it, just in case! It's amazing how much info actually gets around on this site. I hope the ham who needs this is okay.

I'm glad posting has brought it to someone else's attention
Er... So far she's still here, relatively happy, and alive... We'll make a soup shortly and start her on a new diet tonight which should help. Hopefully we can get her sorted out - this thread is definetly the best place to start anyway

Thank you for this thread. I suspect my Syrian has this but we are going to the vets on Thursday so we will see.

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
I know this is for rats but I wondered if it would be suitable for hams with CKD with a supplement. I believe Doodle has CKD so I thought I would do some research prior to our vet visit, so if it is confirmed then I can ask the vet questions

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
I looked at that mix yesterday while ordering a few things for Polly from ratrations (she's the ham we have with suspected kidney failure). In the end I decided against as rats have different nutritional requirements and I'm not completely sure if that mix is designed to protect against kidney problems or to treat them. I figured when it comes down to it I'm happier trusting Hamtastic and making Pollys new diet myself, especially when Polly already seems to be improving on it. I'm starting to understand the mix and why we're doing things as we are and thats reasuring too (Its not just HC I've ended up learning from about this)

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
Had a chat to the very nice man at ratrations, the no.8 no garlic complete is 13.8% protein, 2.7% fat and 5.9% fibre and he didn't see why hamsters couldn't have it. It does seem to have higher protein than recommended but could possibly be used as a base with other things added?

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
I'm so glad to see this here (although sorry for the circumstances). I lost Fudge to Acute Kidney Failure last September and so it's nice to have a detailed resource here if I ever have a hammie go through that again

Re: Chronic Kidney Disease / Chronic Renal Failure: diagnosis, "treatment" options
I can't thank you enough for this thread and all that detailed, useful information Hamtastic!
My older Syrian Chavez (2 years 4 months) started to drink and wee a lot, and became quite inactive, sleeping a lot, and a bit wobbly, after doing research i suspected the kidneys, i took him to the vet with a urine sample and she confirmed it. So i've started to change him over to your diet suggestions, he's getting the soup, and some additional puffed corn and dried banana chips (100% pure banana) which i thought might help his teeth too at the moment. I'm changing him over slowly as i don't want to mess him up, but i will introduce a drop or two of flaxseed oil then too. The vet wasn't keen on the Hills k/ d dog pellets (do you actually use the canine or feline version, i found both online?), but i tend to trust the forum more than the vets so that is still in my mind too. Despite the change of diet he still seems pretty wobbly, well, it's only been a few days, and he is, quite old too but i still do hope it might make a difference and he stays with us for a bit longer yet. So, thanks again for taking the time to gather and post all that very useful information!
