About a week after i got him i noticed the spots but had been reading up on my hamsterlopaedia i discovered what they were

Hi Guys. Can anyone tell me if these `hip spots` appear in male roborovski hamsters at all? One of my older males developed a `round` tumour like lump under his downy fur on his side and I suspected it was a tumour and kept an eye on it to see if it would grow very large.

A week later, it had burst! It now looks like a baldy mass with fur around it, Tubs has chewed a hole in the centre of it and it has`nt went away. I`ve got fresh Baytril here for one of my elderly gerbils who had his teeth trimmed a few days ago, but did`nt want to put any in the hamsters water incase he stopped drinking as Baytril tastes vile. He`s eating and playing away as normal and I have also put veterinary wound powder on the open wound to stop infection, but I still don`t know what this lump is. I first thought tumour, then when it burst, I thought abscess, now I don`t really know.

I can`t take a photo unfortunately as I have no digital camera. But the lump is a hard mass and looks static . I doubt anything can be done for him unless the vet thought it was operable, but that`s risky in itself. Now that it`s actually burst, the wound is open and it`s basically antibiotics, wound powder and fingers crossed.

It sounds as if he has an abcess which has burst. I think he may need to see a vet as you may find it fills up again with pus and can be painful. The vet may say it is healing well but sometimes they will flush the capsule out to remove any remaining infection. Baytril in the water does not provide a working dose as you cannot guage how much has been taken. It is best for the vet to presribe a set dose whuch is best syringed in to the mouth or fed on a tasty treat. I hope he gets well soon.

A dwarf hamster's scent gland is on its belly and can sometimes get a little weepy or crusty.
