Cost of Vets
I was just wondering, how much has a vet trip cost you before? Whats the most expensive you've haerd of it being? How much does medication for things like wet tail cost?
Also, out of curiosity, is there any difference in vets charging for a syrian or a dwarf hamster?
Just want to make sure that i will be able to fully care for my hamster, as i am a student (Oh the shame! ) and money is not my friend, so i would need a bundle saved up in case of an emergency!
Thanks again!

My personal experience with visiting the vet has been in relation to respiratory illness. I had to take a syrian hamster over a period of a couple of months for medication. On the first visit i was charged around £25 ish. Hamster was checked out and medication given. For subsequent visits for the same problem I was then charged £12 each time we saw the vet, although on occassions i just got a repeat prescription - so to say - and was charged around £7.
On another occassion I took the same hamster to the same vet as she had a problem with hair loss - that time we were charged around £10 for a squirt of mite treatment on the back of her neck.
I then finally took the same hamster for a trip to the same vet (i know - drama) as she had broken her tooth. We saw the vet but had no medication and were charged absolutely nothing for the visit :-).
The vet I use in Hamilton is absolutely fab. I don't know if there is a difference between the different types of hamster and cost.

We know our vets well so I am not sure we might get special prices but a first visit would cost £17 plus meds then any more £8 per viisit. We do not usually take hams though as we have been lucky but have sadly had to have a few put to sleep. They do not charge for this. We had a Sunday energancy once and were charged only £12 though it would normally be about £40. Why not start a special hammy vet fund now mairaid. When you hace some spare coppers of silver pop it in the box. It will soon mount up and then you will be confident you can provide vet care if needed. You just have to resist spending it on a nice party night with your friends If you are on limited means and were unfortunate to have a sick ham then you could take it to the PDSA with evidence that you were a student and it would be treated at a lower cost.

the cheapest i've paid is £8.50 to trim 2 dwarfs nails. i did it myself after that! The most expensive is £92 for emergency vet visit and euthanasia.
The cost at my vets is the same for syrian, dwarf, guinea pig, gerbil etc. as they are all under "children's pets" for £13 a go. antibiotics is a couple of quid.

Mine is £16.00 plus the cost of meds for a small animal surgery consultation and £9 for a follow up visit.
Out of hours it's £40 (gulp).....I took Treacle in at night when he had his first stroke - they did give me the steroid injection for free though and, as he recovered beautifully, it was a small price to pay for that.
They are pretty impressive, we've gone there for years with dogs, Harry the cat, rabbits and hamsters.

I've only been to the vets once, and i hope not to go again, where they charged just under £20 which was for the consultation and antibiotics for wet tail. I dont know how much it would've been for any follow up visits though.
The one i used is Champion Vet, think there is one near Ibrox on Paisley Road West if you are near there.

Our vets are very reasonable about £12 for a first visit and then just cost of meds after that.
When Chip had her eye op, with consultation, anaesthetic and eye drops + antibiotics the whole thing was only £18
It does seem to vary immensely from vet to vet though!

Our vets are very expensive if I am taking the cat or dogs or even the rabbit but they do seem to keep their costs down for hamsters. I think they have a 'child's pet' special rate. I guess it is to encourage people to bring hamsters to the vet because some people wouldn't if they had to pay very much to get them treated. Taking Peaches cost me £13 last week which I thought was very reasonable.
