Default Well im upset now :-(

So basically a few weeks ago there was a hamster for adoption in the pet shop because she was 6 months old and nobody wanted her ...

So I said id take her and said ill get the cage ready tonight and pick her up tomorrow , so they said fine, so I went in and she had "banged her toe" and it had swollen up to about 2x its size so I said im not taking a sick animal once she is getting better ill take her , they said if you take her you can bill us for her vet fees I said no ill come in every day and check how she is doing and once she shows signs of getting better ill take her home (I didnt even want her fully healed, only showing signs of improving) , they got to see the cage and said it was brilliant (a zoozone 1 meshed up) so I have been in there shop every day or so checking her and after a week there was no improvement so I said have you got her booked into the vets and they said yes, so I went in the next day and she hadnt been to the vets and they said they were taking her that day , so I went in today after the weekend and asked to see her and they said she has "escaped" but she had got better.

Now I dont beleive that she had got better , if after around 2 weeks the toe had not got better it wouldnt have done so by itself over a weekend. So either they have freed her, gave her to somebody eles or PTS and havent admitted it. Either way I think their conduct has been rather unproffessional and I have decided ill not shop there again.

I had handled the hamster and she was beautiful, pure white with black eyes and a syrian, a chunky one at that. I had been excited to take her home and would have offered her a great home

Im just a bit upset that they wouldnt admit what they have done to the animal, whatever they have done they could have just said I mean they had my phone number to let me know what the vet said about her and they said they would phone me but they never did.

Looks like I have a spare cage!

Unfortunately there is not much you can do if you did not commit fully and take her home Bekki
It's a shame but lets hope someone else nice decided to take her and have her seen by the vet themselves.

I know I didnt fully commit by taking her there and then, all of my animals will see a vet instantly if they need one btw before I say what I am going to say, I was not going to take a sick animal that would instantly need vet treatment (even though they said they would pay the bill), she was officially not for sale and reserved for me and I am friendly with one of their staff members and from other things she has said this establishment is far from brilliant (farm style breeding upstairs! they look good from teh outside but all is not as it seems - she said loads of things that were huge warning signs while no other staff members were around) , she was taken off shop floor and they knew I had even bought new cage things for her! They said theyd take her to the vets and let me know what the vet said .. they never did.

Id love to think she has gone to a loving home but I know that its unlikely. I would think that (from what the staff member said about how they breed etc) she was "bucketed" upstairs , because why would a shop who breed tonnes of animals themselves waste money on teh vets, their breeding practices arent good, they brought down a faunarium (you know the reptile tank things?) full of rats cramped in, food all over, dirty etc looked like they had lived in it a while and put them in a tank for sale ... just more proof that the shop that looked brilliant really isnt.

All I am annoyed about is that people dont tell the truth. If they had just said she was PTS or taken home by a member of staff then I wouldnt mind at all, but I do not for one minute beleive that a hamster with a bad foot could escape from an aquarium with no shelves, no wheel or hidey house and a lid. And in a pet shop who know rodents, surely they would make everything escape proof!

It looks like either my WW or Robo is going to get a cage upgrade to a zoozone then thats a positive I guess.

I wish I had just taken her and took her to the vets and stuff, but my OH would have gone mad at me taking in no good for breeding sick animals, it doesnt stop farm breeding that! She was meant to be used for breeding but she just never got pregnant apparently. I was on a guilt rescue type thing really, and I suppose by not taking her and them having to dispose of her it made it harder to fill the space with another poorly bred pet

I could cry I feel so sad.

In hindsight, maybe you should have taken up their offer of letting them pay the vet fees when they offered, but they may have lied to you about that anyway. Such a shame they can`t take better responsibility for the animals they are selling. They have obvioulsy got rid of her somehow but unless you knew where, there isn`t much you can do to report them to your local council who regulate their licence. The hamster should have been seen long before they took any action.

I dot think i could have left her, but then thats just me. She probably only needed some baytril and metacam to help the foot. Doesnt sound like a great place, if standards upstairs are so bad can they not be reported for that?

Yes I would agree that you should report them to the local council animal welfare and see if anything is done. I think you cold do this anonymously.

I agree Bekki, it sounds like a horrible place where the welfare of the animals is far from top of the list.

Thats very poor!!!

As a potential adopter they must tell you everythink about the hamster, you wouldnt find a dog rescue doing all that why should it be different for a hamster,!!!!!!!! *angry*

You should complain and threaten to take them to higher grounds!

xx

aw that's sad, i feel bad for you and of course the wee innocent hamster. for them being a pet shop, then they should have a bit more compassion for the wee pets and should have got the wee ham sorted at the vets. but if the ham is gone, then hopefully it's somewhere safe.
