Default Nasty odour?

I was always pretty chuffed that our hams were nice, clean creatures over the last month however the last week or two they've reaaaaaaaally started to pong. We change their entire bedding every 5 days now but it's hard to keep up with the awful stench they've started giving off

It's quite a strong smell, hard to explain but it's not of what I'd usually describe as the "nasty stuff", but it's not very nice either I've checked them both over for any irregular oozing and the such, and I've kept an eye on what's coming out of them but nothing seems any different, just their cage stinks

Anyone know what it could be? We use Natural Carefresh - not sure if this could be part of the problem as they didn't stink this much on the P@H pedding

i use the same carefresh as you, and mine are ok for 2 weeks with little to no smell, it might dipend how deep it is and if yours use a sand bath for toileting.
5 days on carefresh would hardly smell and mine are right next to my bed.

have you disinfected the cage and checked food stores, they might be storing something that dosnt keep well like carrot cheese or any things like that.

I hope you can work out what the problem is

is it just with dwarfs (im bad at remembering who has what im afraid) my chinese barely smells and my WW constantly smells of popcorn.
if its strong amonia smell i would keep a close eye and maybe visit a vet. but if its with all of them its confusing what it could be

what veg are you giving them? if you have switched kinds or something recently that may account for a change in odor. Mine did that too all of the sudden not too long ago for a few weeks and then went to not smelling quite as bad but still not quite as good as before. maybe try placing baking soda beside the cage in a little bowl or getting bedding with more odor absorption in it? They also have stuff thats to make their bathroom breaks not smell as bad or to put in the cage to reduce odor. or there is the sand bath if yours won`t use it you can try the shampoo spray stuff? if you dry them off very quickly afterwards and make sure not to let them get cold or dry them at a high temperature. make sure its them and not their cage if its their cage soak the bottom in hot water and baking soda and wipe the bars down and rinse it well (if you have bars). Hope this has helped.

I haven't given them any veg yet Haven't been able to get to the shops with anyone when they've been
I've switched them to Megazorb now and hopefully that will stop the smell but I'll definitely use those tips for cleaning their cage out thank you

I use carefresh for my lot as well and boy do my syrians stink! I must do weekly changes. One stinks more than the other as well. I've never figured out why, except that I see more poos in her cage than the other 3.
