Re: Pyometra Information
A fantastic and detailed..,just what we need... My rather elderly hamster Tillifer died of this and she was the kind that just gets a fat tummy and no discharge.. I didn't know what was wrong until it was too late..
This will undoubtably help others in a similar position
Big stroke for Honsydo

There is another option - high dose Baytril and a medication called Galastop. I have had good success with this in a girl who was not fit for surgery (there are some situations in which surgery is not appropriate such as the hamster being elderly or frail). My vet prescribed double dose Baytril twice a day in addition to the Galastop. Initially we gave one week's course, but the symptoms recurred after a month, so she had a further fortnight and stayed symptom free until her death 5 months later.
It's not entirely clear to me or my vet how Galastop (generic name: cabergoline) works in the context of pyometra and I couldn't find any literature about it apart from a single sentence in Hamsterlopaedia. To be honest, when it worked I decided I didn't really mind how it worked, just that it did! Galastop is a solution and the cat strength is diluted in water and given once a day. I would recommend using a glass bottle and having plenty of spare syringes as it's strong medication and doesn't react well to plastic. Also it shouldn't be handled by pregnant women (full info in the info leaflet with the medication).
I wouldn't choose this over a spay in a younger fit hamster, but for the oldies who seem more prone to pyo it offers a little hope.

Re: Pyometra Information
hi, i need help..... taken poppet my female syrian to the vets, and its been confirmed that she most probably has a pyometra. for those that have hamsters with this or no about the condition i have a few questions:
1) would u say there was an age that u wouldnt put them through the spaying operation? ( i ask because poppet is nearly 2)
2)has anyone ever had baytril work, as this is what i have been given
3) the vet is waiting to here from a drug comapany she has phoned about an injection used in dogs with pyometras, that contracts the uterus so it expells the puss
4) what did u use to clean the area and did u squeeze the puss out or allow it to come out
5) did your hamsters remain active bright etc because poppet isnt even acting like she has anything wrong and i dont know if this is normal.....
6) lastly do i need to give a special diet or is she ok on her diet already...
sorry for all the questions im just extremely worried and the vet didnt reallly give much detail. any answers would be much appreciated..

Re: Pyometra Information
Thank you for all this information! My hamster is having surgery on Wednesday but it is for a tumour on her belly. The guide you have given will really help us on how to care for her post op. Thank you so much

So just a heads up to check around for vets that are willing to give hammies the care they deserve. Fingers crossed I find one that is this fab!

That's just not cool! Every living animal should be able to get the care they need, no matter how small.

Re: Pyometra Information
Im so glad she is on the mend now, my hamster is poorly at the moment and the vet is unsure exactly what is wrong with her, she is showing classic pyo signs but then also other symptoms which just don't tie in at all. Currently waiting to see when I can bring her up and Im so worried, but seeing this has certainly helped a little to know that if it is pyo, then she can get better! x

Re: Pyometra Information
Ok, since it's now been a month since her course of shots has finished and her symptoms have cleared up, I figured I'd share details of Esme's successful pyo treatment here. I hope this might be of use to someone - I was very relieved to know there was an alternate, less invasive treatment other than womb removal for a 20 month old ham
She was given injections of Alizin, 0.12mls on day 1,2, 8 and 15. (if anyone's curious, the initial consultation cost £33 and each shot after that was £5, so the whole treatment was about £55.)
After the second shot her symptoms (faint blood spots in bedding, and pus) completely vanished. They reappeared briefly on the night before her final shot, however the vet reassured me that Alizin works not by vanishing the infection immediately but by flushing it out bit by bit, so this was normal. She added that if I was still seeing Esme's symptoms 1 week after the final shot, I should bring her back for a final additional shot. This was thankfully never needed - please wish us well that it will never be needed!
I truly believe this treatment saved my girl's life, so if your vet is like my first useless one who just waved us away with antibiotics, please try to find a small animal specialist and ask about Alizin!
If you want to read Esme's full story her thread is here: Pyometra in Female Hammy

Re: Pyometra Information
Was this not scary and upsetting having your wee hamster away for a while getting an operation?
My Hamster Honey has this wee thing at the top of her bum and it's bleeding :/
I'm kind of hoping this isn't what she's got
I went to the vet the other day with her because i had noticed that thing above her bum and the vet that i got had no clue what he was walking about he said that it's just "where his wee willy hides" and i was like..."She's a girl" So hopefully when i go back to the vet again i'll get another vet that knows what they are talking about D:
