Re: Pyometra Information
Brilliant info Nat. However, as you know, Poppy was PTS because of this. Sometimes you have to say No to the operation, I suppose it depends on the age of the hamster and/or how sick they are. Poppy became very ill within 24 hrs, 4 days of antibiotics didn't help. When I took her back the vet said it was unlikely she would survive the op. I trust my vets but the first vet I saw didn't think it was Pyometra, so maybe the outcome would of been different.
It broke my heart, but just want others to know I acted quickly but for Poppy it was too late.
At least now I know for sure & can keep my eye on little Pebbles. As I have said before I am so pleased Honeydo is well on the way to recovery we didn't need to lose another little Mink girl on HC.

Re: Pyometra Information
A very well written topic that explains in plain terms what anyone should do in the same situation. I also agree that baytril is not an option for this condition and it`s better to ask for the surgery there and then if pyo is diagnosed, rather than prolonging things, which can mean the hamster getting sicker. I have a male syrian, but I do have a female chinese hamster and I always worry about pyo in females or blood/discharge appearing from the nether regions.
Honeydew looks positively relieved to be home by the looks of things!

Re: Pyometra Information
Great write up, Nat!
I wish that the op could be universally successful, but sadly, as RachK pointed out, it's not

Re: Pyometra Information
Just to add, vaginal bleeding/ pus discharge isn't always indicative of pyometra, but can be symptomatic of a large number of other uterine and ovarian problems.
Anfreda was spayed in August (aged ~18 months) after suffering vaginal bleeding and pus discharge - there was no sign of uterine infection. We think it must have been something ovarian, going by her other symptoms (including recent behavioural ones).
I appear not to have taken any photos of her op site, but this is how swollen her belly was shortly before things started leaking
As soon as I noticed something was up (evening) I pre-emptively started her on baytril to cover the surgery, and also gave her some metacam for the pain. The op itself went fine, and she was given Vetergesic (opiod painkiller) and metacam post-op. The first night after I kept her in a rat show tank (Ferplast Geo XL) half on a heat pad and gave a smushy cooked carbs meal high in iron-rich protein to promote healing and encourage eating. She was on metacam for 3 days post-op and baytril for 5 days. Cleared 7-day health-check fine.
Her op cost rather more than the OP's did - I think they bumped up the price because it was an emergency. The prices they quoted for rat spays were less than half the price, and I'm really rather suspicious....
I think this is a really good and informative topic to have stickied

Re: Pyometra Information
Honeydo does look very happy So pleased for you. My hamster is suspected of having the same condition, but have seen two vets in my area so far who have both said that the operation is not an option for a hamster. So just a heads up to check around for vets that are willing to give hammies the care they deserve. Fingers crossed I find one that is this fab!
