Re: Now Poor Little Phoebe is Poorly
Thank you for all the get well wishes. She is still fine in herself, rolling around my feet as I type!
Lil Miss - I checked the dosage and the vet is sure its right, so Im going with that. The stength on the bottle says 2.5% oral solution. She is about 160g . . . so . . . whatever that works out to - maths never was a strong point of mine! It doenst seem like loads in the syringe, and she is being a very good girl about me restraining her in a towel to poke a big pointy thing in her mouth! Poor love.
She is acting fine though, as I say, but due to her digging up all the substrate in her cage to under her bed so that its on a hill of megazorb I cant tell whats going on in her sandbath, but certainly nothing bloody looking, but Im not holding my breath.

Re: Now Poor Little Phoebe is Poorly
It does depend on the strength of the meds Hope. Our vet normally gives 0.1ml twice a day. It looks like about a drop and the syringe is a very thin one drawn up to 0.1.
It does sound like a little cystitis and this usually gets better quite quickly. Try and encourage her to drink plenty.

Re: Now Poor Little Phoebe is Poorly
Thank you Souffle, I hope it is too. It is quite watery blood, not gloopy or anything, and if I handnt have noticed the ball in the wheel I wouldnt have known there is anything wrong. She is just as she always is in every other way. She is having some very weak cranberry juice and some cucumber too to try and up her fluid intake.

Re: Now Poor Little Phoebe is Poorly
the dosage is fine hun, sounds like hes going for the double strength dosage (20mg/kg) which is the maximum dosage that can be given safely
2.5% solution is 25mg/1ml which means you have 0.25/0.01ml
so normally on a 10mg/kg you would have
0.25mg per 0.01ml = 25g so 150g would be 0.6, double that for 20mg/kg = 0.12ml
without faffing around to work out the extra 10g

Re: Now Poor Little Phoebe is Poorly
It is worth checking the dosage with your vet, but don`t be too worried because a higher dosage is better than a low one. Especially if there is blood in the urine as this means the infection could be higher up in the kidneys. Once you see blood, this is normally a sign that the infection has been brewing for a while, so a stronger, longer course of antibiotics is probably a good thing.
What breed is Phoebe Hope? Antibiotics usually clear these symptoms within a few days or so, depending on the infection and the drug being used. If the blood stops, keep going with the drug because stopping prematurely can mean a return, so ask your vets advice about keeping going with the Baytril for perhaps a few weeks at least if you feel it`s beneficial.
