I have the worse night
Hi everyone,
Some of you may be aware that I was told that phileas had skin cancer well seems not likely now as the majority of her fur has grown back.
Well the next issue arises where I pick her up to say goodnight to her (she was on her platform) and I place her back in where I either knock the platform or it slips, she seems ok untill i go to lift the platform and she starts panicing. I know something must be wrong and i lift her up place her on my hand and to my horror and dread her paw is bent 90 degrees backwards and hanging of.
Well I just started crying whilst trying to try and find the out of hours vet number and someway of getting there.
Short story is the emergency vet has said its a open fracture given her some pain meds, anti inflammatorys and straped it up (massive shes waddling) and said to get her over to my vet in the morning about 4hrs time for her (if they agree) to have her foot amputated
Basic question has anyone had any experience? could do with some friendly words feel awful right now

Re: I have the worse night
A while ago I found a website dedicated to its hamster that only had three legs, after getting used to walking around on three legs it said he was a very happy hammy
srry I can't provide personal experience, but I'm sure she'll be fine. good luck!

Re: I have the worse night
I hope she heals quickly! I have no experience with this, but I think that with good care from her mum and vet I think she'll be okay!

Re: I have the worse night
i adopted a 3 legged hamster a few years ago, he was a dwarf and his name was rodney, he had his front paw broken and it was bent backwards facing his body, nobody ever thought to take him to the vets so it healed this way. he coped with life just fine and although i had to make a few adjustments to his cage as he wasnt so good at climbing he lived 12 months with me as a very happy dwarfie.
good luck and my thoughts are with you. xx

Re: I have the worse night
Thank you for your comments and reassurance.
Unfortunately its an open fracture so it has to be amputated. She is 18 months but shes got fight in her and I feel like I ow it to her to give her a fighting chance.

Re: I have the worse night
Good luck to her. There are a couple of three-legged hams on the board, and they seem to manage fine and live very happy lives. I'm wishing her a speedy recovery.

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear this . Lots of luck for today to you and Phileas. As has been said there are a few three legged hams on here, and some that have gone through amputation and are leading happy healthy lives. Let us know how you get on

Re: I have the worse night
Massive hugs to you and Phileas! You have done a wonderful job. Phileas is lucky to have such a caring mum. I'm sorry that the leg has to be amputated, you will no doubt need to learn together how to make life easiest for her but I'm sure you'll manage. No doubt it will make your bond stronger as she will rely more on help from her mum.
I hope it went okay! I'm waiting eagerly on hearing how you both are.
