What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
I wanted to ask you guys what dosage of Baytril you normally give to your syrian hams? I just want to be prepared incase Boris ever requires it. I`ve read a few members` posts which say that they administer 0.1ml for a 1ml syringe neat, but does this depend on the size/weight of the hamster? The average dosage for a mouse is 0.02ml twice a day (I`m used to dosing mice and not hamsters!)
I also found a list of safe and non-safe antibiotics for hamsters, but Baytril is usually the drug of choice by many vets normally unless they feel a different drug is necessary.
So would the 0.1ml sound about right for an average adult male syrian? And do they tend to lap it up if it`s mixed into soft food, or is it best just to swab the hamster and give it neat?

Snickers was on 0.1ml twice a day and she only weighed 145g, he weighed her up before deciding a dosage. I'd say it was fine, she prefered it in babyfood and would eat it all.

Issy has 0.4 topped up with water to 0.8. Which seems a lot. She is 210g

We are normally given 0.1ml once a day or twice if they vet thinks it is a bad infection. Another antibiotic my vet told me is suitable for hamsters and has a dosage listed is Septrin.

Re: What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
Thanks everyone, I`ll take some notes. I like to be informed before I ever need to see my vet, although I imagine my vet treats more hamsters than he does mice (which I normally keep) so I don`t think I would need to tell him the dosage! but I do like to know what others suggest incase I feel his dosage is too low and I can discuss it with him.
Which baby foods do hamster like best? Brand and flavour? And are there other foods that Baytril can be hidden in? With mice, I tend to dose it onto a small 4mm piece of damp rich tea biscuit and the mice just take it as a treat. With hamsters, I`m not so sure that would be a good idea since they have pouches and it might go too soggy.

I administer the drugs straight to the mouth - that way you know they took it! I dropped the 1ml on few oats and that was eaten too, but I think straight into the mouth is the best. the vets said put it in the water, but they will not get the full dose that way (app it tastes nasty, I think Souffle was the one who tasted it)

It does taste awful to humans anyway. I had a lick of a drop once to see why they made a fuss and YUK!

Re: What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
I admit I`ve tasted it too! It has a slighly warm taste I feel but definately is`nt all that pallatable. I agree that swaddling the hamster and gently placing the liquid via syringe into the side of the mouth is probably the best way to administer it. Hope I never need to use it but want to be prepared just incase.
I don`t like the idea of placing it in water either Katarina but I know they (some vets) still insist on this. I suppose it depends on the dilution. I prefer it to be diluted already and given as an individual daily dose. As you rightly said, it`s the sure fire way of knowing what the hamster has taken and it also assures that they are not put off drinking their water due to the foul taste of the drug. The last thing needed is a dehydrated hammie with crystalised urine through lack of water!

Re: What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
Surely the dosage would depend on the concentration of the baytril suspension in question, as well as the weight of the hamster?

Re: What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
I gave Joe & Jan 0.02 neat into there mouths by syringe or found they took it mixed with some rice milk & puffed rice.
The vet told me to put it into there water but there was no way they could of drank the amount she said & they don't get a full dose.
