Altering his diet might help. We are what we eat, so they say. Hamsters do seem to produce a high concentration of calcium in their urine, but I have yet to do some research on this myself. I tend to stick to a dry commercial mix (I feed Burgess Supahamster Harvest and Harry Hamster) together right now and only add Kallo organic wholegrain puffed rice, organic jumbo oats and Buckwheat. He also gets one bonio dog biscuit as a treat and a monkey nut in it`s shell. Fresh food only consist of a piece of apple every few days, a little bit of tomato and that`s about it really.

Calcium content is something I will be careful of aswell. It`s definately worth researching into this if it helps keep conditions like this at bay. Pervention is better than cure...and all that!

Hope he continues to get well katarina. x

I`ve only ever fed a little square of tomato but that`s it. Probably something I done without thinking to be honest but I won`t feed him anything except his dry feed normally and his piece of apple! I need to look at those lists again of `what`s good and what`s not` safe, but I doubt I would feed much of what`s on the list anyway as I don`t particularly feel it`s necessary unless it`s a treat now and then.

**Looked up tomato on the safe/unsafe food lists online for hamsters and it only applies to the tomato leaves (which we would`nt eat either!)

Tomato itself does`nt seem to appear on the lists at all, so it does make me wonder if tomato IS safe for a syrian? Tomato contains lycopene, which is a good antioxidant, but if tomato is best avoided I certainly won`t feed any again. But clarification is needed. I also contains high vitamin C too apprently, so would help in the prevention of urine becoming too alkaline so if it IS safe to feed, I could see it`s benefits.**

More research needed....
