Poor Mouse. This does sound like either a Pyometra or a tumour in the reproductive tract. Treating with antibiotics can give some remission but if an infection it will come back and to cure she will need spayed which is in itself risky. If it is a tumour then if there is no spread these can be removed by an op quite successfully.
Is there any way she could have spiked it on her grass hut or something and hurt herself? If this is the case then antibiotics should help this.
I hope you see an improvement soon and she feels better xx

Well I've just been to check on Mouse, so about 5hrs since I last saw her, and there is only a very tiny amount of blood on her bedding so hopefully this is the beginning of an improvement. She also took some more baby food from me but wasn't interested in any seeds or veg I offered but maybe by this evening she will be feeling even better and more inclined to eat. She is still very quiet and lethargic, so unlike how she normally is so I guess she must be feeling very unwell.
From what my vet was saying because Mouse is so tiny it wouldn't be possible to do an op if it is something other than an infection, or maybe she was just advising against it because it is too risky? How do they find out if it is a tumor or something else, do they do x-rays or is it by touch?
My first thought was Mouse had hurt herself on something but it is definitely coming from the vaginal opening and the fact she seems unwell makes me feel it is more likely to be more than a cut. Though I guess the blood loss could also be making her feel lethargic.
We have plenty of fingers, paws and wings crossed for Mouse here, she is such a little sweetheart I'd be devastated if I lost her so soon but I'm thinking positively and hope she will be back to full health soon. x

Out of interest, I was reading through the Hamsterlopaedia book last night and read about ovarian cysts. It states this condition is common in females that have never produced a litter. The cause is hormonal imbalances due to the effect of repeated cycles without pregnancy and lactation.

Treatment is surgical removal of both ovaries and the womb, so basically a full hysterectomy. Referred to a speying.

They can scan to see if there is pus in the womb or any cysts but this does involve a general anaesthetic which can be risky with a sick hamster. The op would be risky too espacially since she is already unwell and lost some blood. Hopefully she will respond to the meds and feel a little better soon. x

Thank you all for your good wishes and information, much appreciated.
I'm pleased to say that Mouse does seem to be responding to the meds already. This morning she was much brighter and had a good nose around the desk while we were trying to sort out the Baytril, it's nigh on impossible to extract such a tiny amount and then get it into her mouth! We tried baby food first but I used too much and she only took some so I don't think she got the full dose so we used a dropper and gave her just a tiny drop on it's own. I now have to complete the course on my own as hubby is away, 4 hands were definitely easier this morning so just 2 will be fun!! Although Mouse still refused any veg I tried the piece of cheese I put in her cage last night has gone and when I put her back this morning she gathered up some seeds, climbed into her wheel, de-pouched and ate a little of something. A little while later I could hear her running on the wheel with all the seed going round too! Although there was no evidence of bleeding last night I have seen her clean herself today so that could be why, there was also a little bleeding when we had her out but hopefully that will stop in the next day or so.
I know from what's been said it could still be something more than an infection and the meds are just temp relief but I'm being positive and hoping that is not the case. Thanks again.

Its wonderful to hear the meds are working for now, I hope it continues this way
You might find the blood is on and off, more on some days than others.
Keep strong Mouse x

Seems all the lovely good wishes are working! Mouse is so much better now, she is foraging, eating and much more lively these past couple of days, she has even come out to see what is going on when I take her cage lid off! She is also being wonderful to medicate and doesn't struggle at all, I just drop it neat into her mouth. The bleeding does seem to have stopped now but we will have to wait and see if it comes back once she finishes the meds I guess.

With regards to the meds, I have to give her 0.01ml which I do by drawing up more than I need and then measuring off the meds as I give it to Mouse otherwise it is impossible to get such a small amount out of the syringe, this seems to be just one drop, does this sound about right as if you measure the liquid in the syringe so there is just 0.01ml left then there seems more, does that make sense!!? I don't want to give her too much but obviously want her to get enough.

I have been keeping Mouse quiet for a few days but will get her out for a run in the bath tonight and see how she goes.
