Chocolate?
I know obviously chocolate is bad for hamsters..and last night Princess somehow, I have no idea how because she's never gotten out before, managed to escape by pushing her water bottle out of her cage and my mum found her this morning with chocolate all around her mouth and her pouches full so I put her back and had her clear her pouches and now shes in a section of her cage and Ive cleaned it all....How long would it usually take if she had eaten any chocolate? She's very slow today, I hope it's just because its daytime...
edit: I don't know if she actually ate any of it, or just pouched it...she's moving a bit more now..

Re: Chocolate?
I never feed anything with chocolate on it even to my mice because it`s not something they would normally encounter naturally. Do you know how much she consumed? I know chocolate contains a substance that can be lethal to dogs but not sure about hamsters. If she only pouched it it could still melt inside her pouches with the heat, so keep a close eye on her and make sure she drinks plenty.

I don't even know where it came from o.o After she cleared her pouches there were a couple cm long pieces, I don't think she had a chance to eat any because usually she'll pouch things then eat them...Melting is a possibility I suppose D: I've given her a bowl of water, in case she was too weak to reach her bottle and her bottle of water.

Re: Chocolate?
She should be okay if she has`nt muched on lots of it. Watch her for any signs of behavioral change though like lethargy, abnormal breathing or irritability. If she seems bright eyed and going about her daily business, then she should be fine. Try not to worry, but because it was human chocolate, just be safe and monitor her closely.

Re: Chocolate?
chocolate is toxic to all animals, including us if we ate enough, the first signs theobromine poisening are dioriah and weeing more then usual (also sickness in animals that can vomit) that can quickly progress to fits, internal bleeding and heart attacks
i belive an amount as small as 5grams could be enough to cause problems for a hamster, but maybe more around 10 - 15g to prove lethal...
if you are unsure about her i really would get her to a vet

Re: Chocolate?
Oh gosh, I hope she didn't eat a lot of it... :/ 5grams is a tiny amount, so easy for her to have nibbled it! Keep us posted!
