Re: (HELP) Mouse with bloody urine
Hello. I keep mice so can try and give you some answers to your problem. Your male is quite old, so you could be looking at a few issues here. Kidney failure, a severe urinary tract/kidney infection or a tumour. It`s really difficult to say which and I`m not a vet, so I can only submit an educated guess really.
Male mice can be prone to penile prolapse at this age as they `drip` urine most of the time to scent mark. If they get a urinary infection or blockage, this can `back up` the urine and stop the mouse from passing it normally and rather, they will drip darker drops of urine or blood. I don`t think male mice suffer from Urolithiasis, but male rats can and so do hamsters. This is a condition where stones form like crystals in the urine, causing pain and a bloated abdomen. Only surgery helps this, but obviously your little mouse is old and probably would`nt survive an anasthetic.
If you can see a vet in time, he should be on a strong dose of Baytril (enrofloxicin) three times a day. The normal daily dose for a mouse is 0.02ml twice a day, so 0.04ml daily, but I always give a stronger dose. A good drug for urinary tract infections is Synulox or Duphamox drops (penicillin) family.
It sounds as though your mouse needs immediate attention so do try your best to get him to a vet if you can. Try to make sure he can drink plenty to keep him from dehydrating.
