Unhappy I think Daisy has wet tail :(

I picked up little Daisy and I think she has wet tail.

Shes about 8/9weeks old and is a long-haired Syrian. We got her from a pet shop about 2 weeks ago and she has settled in really well so I don't think she is stressed or anything.

We're going to take her to the vets first thing in the morning. She is absolutely fine in herself, running round like a mad thing, washing, eating and drinking but all around her tail/bum is very wet/pooey. I've cleaned her bottom with damp cotton wool and dried her gently with toilet paper. I've moved her cage out of the living room where all the other hamsters are in case it is wet tail and have washed thoroughly/thrown away anything she has come into contact with or stuff I've touched after touching her. She hasn't had any fresh food for 1 week so I don't think it is ordinary diarrhoea. Also, the dry food she has is the same as she was on in the pet shop, hamster feast with fruit. I've also changed her bed as there was a little diarrhoea in there.

Can anyone suggest anything else I need to do before tomorrow morning? I don't think I need to do anything to make her comfy, she seems perfectly happy. I REALLY hope I'm over reacting and that its just a regular upset tummy but I can't help worry, especially with her being quite young. I just want all my animals to be happy and healthy. Em x

Oh dear

I hope she will be ok. Good luck at the vets, make sure that she keeps drinking and eating, as this is important. Sounds like you are doing all you can. x x

You seem to be doing everything right and speedy attention from the vet and treatment with Baytril will hopefully have her right again soon.
Let us know how she gets on x

Thanks all. The vet was pleased I'd taken her in so quickly. She had a good examination of her and she said because Daisy was in such bright spirits it was unlikely to be wet tail (thanksfully!) and she wasn't dehydrated at all. She said it could be a bout of diarrhoea brought on by stress or poor hygiene. I said I clean her out thoroughly once a week and do spot cleans every day including removing the toilet corner woodshavings so she said that sounds fine. She said it could also be the smells from any of my other hamsters. I do wash my hands between handling different hamsters and her cage wasn't near anyone elses. I've moved her out of the living room at the moment so she shouldn't be able to smell the other syrians or Robos. She has given her some baytril to kill anything nasty off lerking in Daisy and said I should take her straight back if she deteriorated at all. She also said to keep cleaning her bottom as I have been doing. We have only had her two weeks though so don't want to stress her out more by keep having to hold her to clean her. She has been such a little angel though, she hasn't biten me or the vet once even though she can't be feeling 100%. She did seem quite perky this morning and her bottom looked a bit cleaner. there was also a poo the wash still very squishy but it was poo shaped. Phew! Hopefully that means she is on the mend. Sorry for keep going on, I just want to make sure I'm giving her the best care I can! OK, I'll stop waffling now! Thanks again everyone for your kind words. Em x

Fingers crossed she will be fine! You got her to the vet so quickly, and with her still being "herself" I think you can relax a little.

Did the vet warn you that baytril can lead to loose poo as it kills off all the good bacteria in the gut as well as the bad? You can give a little natural yoghurt to boost them back up, but with it being potentially an upset tum introducing new food probably isn't a good idea - but just in case she does have a small re-lapse thought it was best to give you a heads up!
