How long hasn't he been eating for? Ears down usually means they're ill..so he might need to go to the vet.. I don't know what he was before..so how much weight has he lost?
To me he sounds Ill..

I don't think hammy's can get depressed but there behaviour does change as they age.. To me he does sound ill but it may not be anything to worry about I'd keep an eye on him overnight, keep offering him food and see if he is eating & drinking & any improvement.. If not I'd take him to the vets tomorrow for a check up!

Hammies don't get depressed and any change in behavior and physical change indicates illness. Give him a good check over and see if you can spot the problem. Check the water bottle is working as well and have him seen by the vets.

Could he have gotten a bit cold while you were away at all? Maybe the heating was not on as much so he felt a bit chilly? They do like their normal routines though so I expect he is glad to be back with you and doing his normal things.
Good to hear he is perking up but keep a close eye on him won't you
