At this point, we don't know if he actually had food stuck in his throat. We're not sure what's going on anymore. It starts out as him squeaking, and then it progresses to him heaving and breathing heavily while squeaking. He is visibly upset during these attacks. His bedding is dust free. I checked his teeth and throat and there doesn't seem to be a problem. The weird thing is, the attacks usually last around 20 minutes, and then he'll be fine for days. He lives with his brother, who has had no problems. He makes a sound similar to this, but much more heaving and squeaking:
Please help, we're so worried. At this point, we don't think its a respiratory infection, since he has short little attacks that only last about 20 minutes and are spaced days apart. But the one today is the worst ever.
Have you gone to the vet already? Maybe he has pneumonia, it sounds very similar to this.
But there are many other possible causes like an understated sort of the backflipping syndrom or the turner-illness ("dreherkrankheit"). I saw that a few times in germany. The hamsters make signs of an apoplectic stroke or behaves strange in other ways, but they do not turn around or flip back.
He hasn't been to the vet yet for a few reasons. Each time it happens, it lasts for only about 20 minutes, and then he'll be fine for days on end (as far as we can tell). The noise is by no means constant, so at this point, I'm not convinced that it's an infection, and wonder if its an obstruction, or something related to his dust bath. It's also incredibly cold and windy, and we wouldn't want that to make him even sicker if we took him to the vets. We are planning to take him if it continues on much longer.
I think taking him to a vet just have a check over would be a good idea even if hes not behaving like that. if there is something wrong or an underlying issues the vet will be able to pick it up with out him behaving like that.
even thought its cold and windy just make sure hes got lots of bedding to snuggle in to and a carry case with soild sides to stopt he wind getting him.
