I am usually quite good at cutting my hamsters nails but harriet's nail on her pinky finger has started to curl and grow around the tip of her finger. I know i can't leave it because it will start to hurt her but harriet wriggles a lot when i cut her nails anyway and with the nail being so close to the skin i'm scared of hurting her if i try to cut it. I know the obvious answer would be take her to the vet but our vet doesn't see many hamsters and from past experience i have found that the vet isn't much more accurate than i am when cutting nails.
So, i was wondering if anybody on hamster central has any advice? Harriet already has a sand bath and i have tried with a nail file and it is really awkward to get to the nail. Any other suggestions? If anyone knows of a vet that deals with hamsters regularly in Newcastle upon tyne then that would be great!
if you use the human nailclippers but the small version of these you can get the nail - if she wiggles alot give her some spaghetti this should keep her still long enuff for you to get the nail.
Grab her carefully when she is sleepy - to do this, wake her up slowly so she doesnt get too startled - like ticking on the cage and talking - and then take her while she is still all sleepy?
