I've also only heard of mites in hay and straw - and this can be easily rectified by popping it in the freezer until you need it - or blasting it in the microwave for a few seconds just before use.

I'm fairly new to hamsters, I'm a 'rat girl' really but I know that all rats carry mites and it's fine. However, when they are immuno-surpressed, it becomes a problem and they begin to show symptoms/become infested. I don't know if the same applies to hamsters.

I also know that injecting ivermectin into a rat can cause death - which was why I was interested to know what your vet injected. It's so easy to give a small animal an overdose, I would always ask before my vet injects anything into my hamster or my rats.

Yeh the vet said something (i was daydreaming so didnt catch it all!) about like they can have a few mites but if they get too many its a problem//.. or maybe i heard it wrong :L

So they can get it from their bedding?? I feel a bit silly asking too but what are the signs to look out for?

Yeah i think so :L i wouldnt waste your time worrying about it, really!
I just started faffing around getting anxious because Mango had some very dandruffy flaky bitsof skin but as he had long hair with like a parting it was obvious :P

Mimi doesnt have mites... and pip and pop havent got round to checking them yet :P But i really doubt they do. they have been in a different room for the time being anyway :P

If you get the ivermectin treatment from P@H, you can treat all of them, even if they are showing no signs. I do all my rats every four-or-so months as a matter of precaution, as FatBruce is prone to a mite flare up. It's only a fiver a pack, too (and I think you get four treatments worth), which is a lot, lot less than £57!
