I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
Hi people,
My Hamster is with the same symptoms of the Wet-Tail.
It's Moonlight, the black banded.
I don't know what to do.
The Vet answer was that is not wet-tail.
Then why she continues with the hair wet?
The vet is one professional, I know, but I'm so afraid, she's with the hair wet since 2 days ago.
But she's happy, she eat and everything...
I'm afraid because she is breeding and 3 babies appear dead today in her cage.
But the vet still continue saying she's healthy.
???
P.S.: The hamsters were not killed by the mother, they were in the cage as the others, but dead.

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
Well, if she has pups in the cage then you can't clean the bed or cage meaning that if she pees in the nest then she'll have a wet bum ... Sometimes babies do just die. And btw how do you know they werent killed by her? I suggest going to a different vets as everyone has different opinions so could dfinitly be worth a try. i've never had any of mine experience wet tail so tbh dont know much about it, but its better to be safe than sorry!
Hope Moonlight's okay, goodluck and plz keep updated!!
ps poor lil babies hope the others will be okay x

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
They were "normal" but dead, if I didn't touch them with a safe thing (because of my smell) I would think that they were alive.
She's better right now, but I just don't know, I'm afraid.
Professional exotic's Vets are rare around here, the next is too far for me. =/
The babies that are alive seems fine now.

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
i read in the book that if you wish you can remove the dead babies if mum hasnt culled them just use a spoon to prevent scent etc and distract mum as you do this.

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
does mum have a bad smell? Wet tail usually smells really bad i've heard.
If she has wet tail, she really needs to get to a vet straight away, maybe try another if this vet insists its not?
The babies are in danger of getting ill aswell, thi sis possibly why they died.
Unfortunately in a situation like this, the babies may die anyway and mums life is more important.
Please check that she hasn't just rubbed on the water bottle and its leaked on her though

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
No, her smell is like always, that's what is confusing me, she is fine, but her hair is wet.
Yes, I know Fluffy, that's why I get her to a vet, the problem here is that at this hours I don't have choice, it's late here and vets are already closed for today.
Usually they stop eating, playing, they become weak, but she's not like that, she's normal, it's so strange.
I can't think of something that can be killed the babies.
I know she ate some in the first 5 days, but now, one litter of 16 hamsters, only 4 are alive right now.
They have 10 days and still don't touch in the food, my babies always started to eat at the 7 days.
Maybe the problem is with them?

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
some babies have underlying problems that we can't see which is why mum culls them.
from the syptoms shes showing it really doesn't sound like wet tail at all, keep a close eye and book an appointment if she does start to show signs of illness.

Re: I'm afraid. Wet-Tail
I've found one good vet open 24 hours per day!!!
This one gave her a a small vaccine and said that these 4 babies will survive because they are showing good signs of life, have started to want to leave the nest and finally got to eat.
I hope so.
