Default Hammie house!

My Syrian hamster has a small house that heís currently nesting / living in; when I say small, itís enough to fit him in that sits on a platform above the bottom of the cage.

Iím a complete beginner when it comes to Hamsters so Iíve gotten the advice from many sites and wanted to just gather one here.

He tends to poo and pee where he sleeps and then sleep on/in it. Iíve been told this can lead to health problems and such but someone else also told me itís normal and to just clean it.

However; would it be okay / normal to remove the house and encourage him to use the bedding / padding thatís in the cage? Or shall I keep it there but clean it everyday or such?

Thank you!

Hi. I would clean out any dropping or soiled bedding everyday if the nest box is small but don't take all the bedding away. Leave the clean stuff. Hamsters like to have a shelter in their cage to sleep and make a nest in but it should really be big enough for them to move around in and store food in and they prefer that. Try putting in a shoebox with a hole cut in the side or something similar for your hamster to sleep in.

Also maybe tear out the bottom of the box so it sits directly on the litter as they like to dig down and it is softer and more comfortable for them
