Smile Frodo's Progress :)

Hello, I've had Frodo for just under a month and I just wanted to share the his and mines progress on here for my own documentation and also if anyone else wants to see our progress over the next few months.

Frodo is a longhaired black Syrian hamster and I'd say he's roughly around 3 months old. Although when I got him they told me he was a boy I'm not 100% sure as his hair seems to hide that area and he doesn't really let me close examine him but for now I am just going to assume that he is.

When I first got him he was incredibly shy, he didn't come out at all while I was awake and would never let me even look at him. His progress over the last month has been amazing and now he recognises my voice and my smell and doesn't view me as a threat.

Anyways, we haven't gone under a lot of bonding so far, he will happily take treats from my hand and sit in my palm and eat snacks if I put my hand down into his cage - but outside handling is a big no no so far.

I took him out into my bathtub the other day which is when I realised he may have a dental problem and one of his teeth got stuck on the blanket I had put down and when I looked closer he seemed to only have 1 really white tooth on his bottom jaw. I've been checking over him and he seems to be eating fine but I have a vets appointment on Monday just for an all round health check up as I am a paranoid mother.

Tonight I spot cleaned his cage for the first time and rearranged the layout and he seems to be coping with it very well. As I am writing this he is currently training for a marathon on his wheel. While having a little explore he let me pick him up and he sat pretty chill in my hands just for around a minute and then he demanded to be put back home again. On each side of the cage there is mesh that he likes to climb up (I'm planning on either buying a different cage or replacing the mesh with plexiglass as I don't want to encourage that behaviour) but he isn't a bar chewer, my bed is directly next to the side that he always climbs up so I kind of feel he is just a little curious but if anyone thinks differently feel free to let me know what you think the issue is.

Anyways I took this cute video of him, it is bad quality and it is dark but this is Frodo. He is the first hamster I have had in around 4/5 years so if anything in the cage seems wrong/dangerous please let me know

He's lovely and looks to be coming on very well.
With the length of his coat he is likely a male as they tend to have that really long skirt around the back and females are more short and fluffy all over.
He should have two teeth on the bottom so you are right to have him checked. If one is missing the top tooth opposite it may overgrow.
If he's going to need frequent checking I'd progress the handling now to getting him happy running hand to hand. He will be skitty at first but will soon settle down for once he gets used to it. Make sure he can fee your hand around his body so he feels safe.

Frodo is still a little skittish but definitely is slowly getting better. I've noticed he doesn't like sudden noises no matter the volume. If I shift in my bed and a spring makes a noise he darts across the cage, but he is completely fine with my voice and it actually helps him if I talk while making a sudden noise. He has also started to show a lot more interest in things in his cage like some chews I put in which he never really bothered with before and he is just sniffing things and inspecting them a lot more. I have noticed he has been a little restless it seems so I'm planning on getting more things to add to his cage for more enrichment.

His taming progress is basically at the same stage. He is still very wary of me and will happily accept treats if I give them to him but if they are on the palm of my hand he is skeptical. He let me hold him for about a minute today and he was fine - usually when he takes treats from my palm his body makes a buzzing feeling but when I held him earlier there was no buzzing feeling, but he refused to take a treat from me till he was back in his cage.

He has definitely realised the sound me reaching for his treats for sounds like. As soon as he hears me rustling in the bag he stops everything and waits for the treat.

Anyways, everything is basically still the same. He is eating fine now but I am still due him an overall check at the vets as I had to reschedule. I was meant to upload a picture to show you Frodo but I gave up so no photo of Frodo today.

Taming process is doing so well. He occasionally makes a little buzzing feeling when he is stepping on my hand when I have treats - but it usually goes away as soon as he sits in my hand. He is doing so well, he will take treats from my palm and when there is none left he will sit in my hand. This is the second night in a row I have been able to handle him for a few minutes. I'm getting him used to the feeling of being picked up and he is doing well with this. I'm so glad he is getting more comfortable with me now.

I've noticed he has started getting a little antsy in his cage so I'm planning on buying a lot of new things for enrichment when I get paid so I'm really excited about that.

He has also stopped being a picky eater. Before he turned his noise up to everything, for example mealworms. I swear he had a deep hatred towards mealworms before, but now they play an important role in the taming process as he can't get enough of them now.

Hello, I didn't post anything on here about Frodo as it was quite upsetting but it's been a few months since so I'm going to write all about this now.

Frodo had a vets appointement on the Saturday, 14th of April regarding his teeth. When I first got him I realised he was a very picky eater and did not eat the larger pieces in his food mix and it got me a little concerned. He was very skittish so he didn't allow me to hold him to look over his teeth properly but from what I could see he had one white tooth on the bottom which was extremely worrying. From inspecting he seemed to have been eating and drinking fine. I was meant to have a vets appointment earlier than the 14th of April but we could not make it and he seemed to of been fine so I rearanged it to said date.

However, on Friday 13th April I came home from work to find Frodo passed away. This absalutely crushed me as he had been fine the night before.

Turns out that his bottom teeth were not the only issue. His top two teeth were so overgrown which was the cause of his death. I am incredibly so heartbroken and guilty as I completely misjudged what the issue with Frodo was. If he only lasted one more day he may still be here today but unfortunetly that wasn't the case, and I will never make this mistake ever again. He has now been buried alongside with my other babies and is no longer in pain.
